One day I won’t have to fight for access to classes. Oh wait this is academia. We only talk about adapting to climate change, professors teaching about climate adaptation & vulnerability clearly can’t (won’t) practice what they teach. How silly of me 😅

In the meantime the gist is: a fuck ton of people are completely abandoned by society, and the fact there are so few people who give a shit about that harms both the abandoned people *and* the few people close to us trying to keep us alive with whatever clever solutions we can muster.

Ya’ll I can’t tell you how happy this me. It’s dream news! Today I found out that my family members & friends are starting to trust science again. They all said that they care about not spreading germs & they’re actually starting to take clean air & Covid precautions! They’re wearing masks, using

Mask bans are an issue of bodily autonomy, free speech, and disability justice. You have a right to health and to privacy.

You REALLY want to keep both during the rise of fascism.

Want to do community care? Resist? Be an ally?

Get loud about mask bans. Put on an 95. Give/get mask mutual aid:

Wow! Thank you @daniellebeckman.bsky.social, @davidjoffe64.bsky.social , & @thewhn.bsky.social for this brilliant session on #LongCovid! The more I learn about the impacts of SARS CoV 2, the more I become committed to protecting my little human & avoiding infection, while advocating for clean air.

This panel was the highlight of the #AAG2025 conference. I’m so grateful to have been a part of this important discussion. Thank y’all so much for your hard work in making spaces more accessible. ❤️😷
This panel on covid safer counter-spaces is happening tomorrow morning at #AAG2025! I'll be talking about the intersections of climate change and pandemics, and sharing about local disability justice organizing.

Your allyship with the disabled & BIPOC communities is completely performative if you’re not wearing a mask nor having hybrid options to make spaces accessible. When you know better, you do better.

Every day I grow more & more grateful for educators that take infectious diseases seriously. Just to know that my little human’s teachers understand the importance of breathing clean indoor & outdoor air gives me hope. They’re all rad & kind people, which is an added bonus. 😷

NEW: @noaa.gov offices have been asked to search their grants for climate-related keywords, among other executive order-related terms. This could put climate grant-funding in the crosshairs if/once the judicial order holding the funding freeze back is lifted. www.axios.com/2025/02/09/n...

Tuberculosis outbreaks in Kansas and North Carolina and yet I’ve not seen a single media outlet mention wearing masks.

In fact masks are banned in North Carolina.

A good respirator protects from more than just Covid. The people deserve to know how to keep themselves safe.

Scientists and journalists need to figure out right quick how to explain to the average person how a massive change in research indirects will impact the medical care they and their children get (eg at the local children’s hospital), the education their children will get, the price of tuition, etc.

And for all the scientists asking “what can we do?”, here’s an interesting suggestion: call your local TV stations and newspapers and tell them you’d be happy to be interviewed. if you do that, please let us know and we’ll share so others can learn.
About local media: just "reach out to them," scientists, says @leahshaffer.bsky.social.
Other questions?

I mean, reach out to them. Even just to say the situation is chaotic and if their research is on pause. There's a legit fear of blowback, but just reach out and clarify you represent yourself, can't speak for your institution.

Ignoring the harms from Covid 19 will not make you nor your children immune from the effects of inhaling the pathogen. Ignoring the science on the consequences of infections & reinfections will not protect you. We all need to breathe clean air.

I want to expand on the extent to which IDEAA materials have been purged: I wrote an article last year for women’s history month on the history of women in antimicrobial development….DELETED.
I’m on one of ASMs IDEAA committees and we have received 0 communication from ASM staff on why this is happening. I had to find out via social media. Extremely disappointing.

If my experience has taught me anything about academia, never underestimate the power of active listening, kindness, and compassion. Having people who care enough to listen and mindfully respond, instead of listening to talk is so valuable.
