Cold hands, altered ownership? We link disturbed body ownership in stroke patients to reduced hand temperature and impaired thermoception. The right Insula & Parietal hubs are key players. We are excited to share our new findings

Great start to #IMRF2025 with Symposium 2 all about body representation and some amazing talks! Really enjoyed hearing about how sounds can affect it, e.g. with the auditory pinocchio illusion 🔊, something quite different than what I work on but so fun!

Day 1 of #EUCAS2025 is a wrap!
We kicked off with our grant-writing pre-event, thanks to our amazing speakers: @davidecrepaldi.bsky.social, Francesca Lionetti, Luca Rinaldi & @gerardosalvato.bsky.social for sharing insights.
We closed the day, spirits in hand at the welcome reception. On to Day 2!

In "The Invisible Hand," @mattlongo.bsky.social provides a deftly written account of the neural and cognitive mechanisms that have made a seemingly ordinary physical appendage—the human hand—an extraordinary tool in the evolution of humanity: mitpress.mit.edu/978026255187...

📱🌡️👶 Even brief parental distractions (digital and non-digital) can distress infants. Using thermal imaging, we found unique stress responses when moms used smartphones instead of paper. Distraction matters, and the type of distraction might matter more.

New paper alert! In this chapter, part of a volume led by the late Bud Craig’s colleagues Alan Simmons, Marc Wittmann, and Irina Strigo, we opine on the role of the insula in interoception and body image processing in anorexia nervosa and other health conditions. pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/40178772/

🧵4/5 Disconnections in bilateral parietal regions are associated with lower hand temperature, while disconnections in a right lateralized thalamus-parietal hub correlate with thermoception deficits. 4/5

🧵3/5 Lesion mapping reveals associations in the right operculum and #insula, indicating that these regions are linked to lower skin #temperature. Deficits in #thermoception are associated with the same brain regions, but more anteriorly.

🧵2/5 Patients with right-brain damage and altered ownership for the left-hand exhibit lower basal hand temperatures bilaterally and impaired perception of cold and warm stimuli compared to right-brain damaged patients with and without hemiplegia and preserved ownership.

🧵1/5 🌡️ #Thermosensory signals may contribute to the sense of body #ownership🖐️, yet their role remains highly debated. In our new study, we test this assumption within the framework of pathological body ownership after right-brain #stroke🧠
