You know what’s coming: this is your regular reminder to disconnect on the weekend and do things that are good for you. I recommend you do it twice if you read the US NSS yesterday.

You asked (or maybe not), I deliver: new piece on Geopolitical Europe is out!

geopoliticaleurope.substack.com/p/europe-mus...

Europe must not fall back in the alliance comfort trap as negotiations on Ukraine get a positive dynamic and US is constructive.

German threat perception on RUS was most surprising finding to me.

<50% see RUS as major military threat, although leading political figures openly warn against RUS threat

Balanced views between China as minor military threat/ no military threat, but only small minority sees major military threat

More Europe on nukes: Germans say ja, bitte

US nuclear umbrella not seen as reliable (not surprising), but a European nuclear umbrella would be. It's, of course, more a theoretical question as Europe couldn't replace US umbrella, but fascinating bc there's much less optimism in the policy debate.

US as a partner: Germans say nein danke and don't see US as reliable.

The finding itself is little surprising - but it is striking *how massive* the Trump effect is, as the perception of reliability of the US has plummeted since last year.

Currently working on my holiday reading list for Geopolitical Europe - and I need more books on strategy, Europe, multipolarity etc written by women and non-Western scholars. If you have recommendations, drop them in the comments or my pms!

Just sharing this beautiful Zürich sunrise (yesterday) as a reminder to disconnect on the weekend and do things you enjoy. 💫

I’m (almost) back from vacation - and just as my Airbnb cat in Istanbul was looking for snacks, I’m looking for the publications and papers I’ve missed in the last three weeks! Pm me or share in comments. Thanks!

AU REVOIR, PARIS!

Yes, you read this correctly: today was my last day at @gmfus.bsky.social in Paris! After three weeks of vacation, I’ll be moving on to my next professional adventure… stay tuned!

Another pretty (pretty annoying) example for gender bias in AI: when you ask AI to create an image of the UNGA room, the speaker on the screen is... a white man. And yes, women and/or people of colour speak at UNGA in reality - but that doesn't seem to be the world LLMs are taught.

Yes, it still exists... later this week, after the informal summit of heads of state or government in Copenhagen, the European Political Community meets again!

But no agenda/ information on Commission website or Danish Council Presidency website yet.

I re-read a report by Kerry Brown & Shefali Shah on US-China relations this morning - and found this map. It's easy to forget *how* important Germany is in European trade, and how much EU/ EFTA matters for trade among European states.

I haven’t opened this app, read any news, or checked my mailbox for six days because I was busily enjoying sunrises in Greece. Mentally bracing myself now, happy Wednesday everyone!

Another picture from Paris taken today, which makes me furious (to say the least): pretty pictures of people swimming in the Seine or the Canal are more important than decent accommodation. Wrong priorities.

This is your regular weekend reminder to disconnect over the weekend (or even the summer), do things that give you joy, and are good for you.

Note: not AI generated, just taken at 7am without tourists.

Happy Monday and joyeux 14 juillet (Bastille Day)! 🇫🇷

It’s a privilege to call this beautiful city home (for over six years now!) - with all its everyday splendour and despite daily unsolicited reminders of my accent in French.
