In terms of the standards of mathematical practices, I would say it should always be essential. Students need to be able to articulate their thinking. If they can’t talk the language of math, it makes it very difficult for them to write about the math. Conversations for the win.

Thanks, John. I still remember our conversation at one of the TM camps where you had a wish to incorporate more contexts into the progressions. I haven’t forgotten, but it’s so tough in a three minute window. I hope all is well, my friend.
