If a GOP congress person sees what is happening, knows their district has a chance of turning blue, has any decency left, & wants to participate in saving democracy, then retiring is an excellent choice. They can eliminate the hurdle of incumbency while still saving face & just get out of the way.

In my younger years, I was pretty brainwashed against not-for-profit universal healthcare, but now believe it is the only solution. Not an easy solution, but the only solution.

While I'm super happy for those the ACA did help, my family made just enough not to qualify for enough subsidy to make it affordable. We went without healthcare and paid the penalty, which we also couldn't afford. Every dollar we paid in penalty was a dollar we couldn't pay for our own care.

Even the subsidies left the lower to mid middle class out by setting the acceptable affordability limit at 9% annual income for premiums. The middle class couldn't afford to spend 9% of their income on medical premiums.

Obama wanted universal coverage but Congress gave us the ACA. There are good parts of the ACA, such as barring exclusions for pre-existing conditions, requiring fully covered annual preventative care, and subsidies on the marketplace. However...

Yes, today's crisis is overwhelmingly the consequence of the 93rd Congress under Nixon passing the HMO Act. But, both houses under Nixon had a Democrat majority and the Act was supported by unionists as a way to reduce healthcare costs. It didn't go as planned.
