Listen to me. We don’t have much time. Rob Manfred is the reason this is all happening. He has compromising information on the most senior executives of the Red Sox, Tigers, Cubs, and Dodgers, and he’s not afraid to use it. I’m talking like, really heinous stuff, the sort of shit these guys would just never, ever come back from. No, not crimes, obviously, way worse (meaning, more damaging to future job prospects). He’s got pictures of all these guys in off-brand athleisure. I’m not even talking lulu, Manfred’s got these guys dead to rights in discount-color separates from Target, Kohl’s, and, even, in the case of one particularly embarrassed mid-40s white man, Old Navy. I know, shocking. So, you wanna know who the Manfred Man is? Every single one of these gentlemen, and when the commissioner says we can’t have another year with four two-game sweeps in the Wild Card Series, well, they’re yours. [A door bangs open] HEL-lo commissioner, how are you? Us? Oh, we were just talking about the 2025 Postseason Picture, presented by Adobe, the best way to graphically represent and understand the road to the 2025 World Series, presented by Capital One and exclusively on FOX. What a dazzling bit of success for the Wild Card Series, almost as big as the STRAUSS logos featured prominently on every batting helmet! [Editor’s Note: This introduction was written before the Dodgers game finished last night, obviously disproving the hypothesis in the introduction. Rest assured, BP does not claim that Rob Manfred pressured teams to lose to bring balance to the new playoff format, and the fact that a five-page spread was published this morning depicting various Los Angeles executives in ill-fitting Kirkland Signature windbreakers incorrectly monogrammed with the middle initial in the center is clearly coincidental. BP asks that you respect the families of those mortified executives at this time.]

article preview: It’s hard to remember after his 2023 tour de force, but once and present World Series MVP Corey Seager did not always seem like the world’s most obvious $325 million free agent signing. Qualitatively, we liked the signing at the time, but quantitatively, he’d established himself as a 3-4 WARP player—in words Fred Wilpon once used about David Wright, a very good player, not a superstar. Yet lurking underneath were major signs that Seager had this in him. Seager has always had elite bat speed and swung away at a very high amount of strikes, but since 2020 he’s run at the top of the league for in-zone swing percentage. He’s done this without developing a chase rate problem—his outside-of-zone swing percentages have remained around league-average—and he’s not just making weak contact; his exit velocities and launch angles have been ticking up as he’s swung more, not down. Basically, he’s attacking pitches he can destroy and destroying them as well as any hitter in the lea

World Series Game 5 Preview: Once Bitten, Thrice Rangered

article preview: Zac Gallen is on his second first shot—there are only so many chances a player gets to cement his playoff legacy, and even with a team on the upswing like Arizona (really, both competitors here) you don’t get any guarantees of return on those designs for dynastic contention. Gallen’s playoffs started off strong, but he lost both of his NLCS starts and struggled in his Game 1 outing, allowing eight of 22 baserunners to reach against just five punchouts. The 28-year-old has cemented himself as a true ace in recent seasons, but that can only count for so much against the massive weight of postseason expectation. Nathan Eovaldi, meanwhile, is working on a different sort of legacy—as a playoff hero. His worst start of the month by far was also confined to this matchup, and if one wanted to be technical they could point out that his ERA has ballooned over the past few series. Except that also amounts to all of four starts since the Division Series, so… make of that what yo

This is one of my favorite things to read as a comment on BP. It isn't inherently good (though @ginnysearle.bsky.social's preview IS good), but it's tied to my promotion of the site, yesterday. I want BP to be a place you get the baseball coverage you need, but also the coverage you never expected.
Comment: I'm going to go out on a limb, and say that I'm not going to find another Series preview like this (or Shakespeare analysis) on any other website...
