Virtual private networks have become standard tools for many journalists, as the services promise to enhance privacy, security, and freedom.

Jacob Roach tried to find a #vpn that really works.

"Overall, the message from this survey is positive– #evolutionary #biologists are readily employable outside of #academia, generally well-prepared for those jobs, and report high levels of satisfaction in their non-academic #careers"

A scientific figure from the linked paper by Betancourt et al. It shows on the left, that most (70%) evolutionary biologists who switched to a career outside of academia felt prepared. The right panel is a graph showing what training individuals would like to have received more of during their academic career, with the top points being related to management skills.

This isn't my sub-field of astronomy, but someone needs to give this conference 1000 internet bonus points for the best, most geographically relevant acronym, plus their logo is ADORABLE

I am excited to announce that we are one step closer to the Bremen musicians thing (which I only learned about from many members of the European Fediverse sending me the wikipedia link https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Town_Musicians_of_Bremen).

This young […]

An open door in a large yellow barn, which is nicely framing a large black goat with white droopy ears, who has a grey rooster perched on his back. The goat does not seem to mind this in the least. It's just starting to get dark so the picture is a little fuzzy. A bunch of goats bouncing around on a pile of wood, with 2 of them starting to climb onto the back of a small brown horse who is purposefully standing next to the pile of wood so he can get back scritches from the goats. The are in a large grassy field with a tall wooden fence on one side. Same scene as the previous picture, with one grey goat standing on the back of the small brown horse. Same scene as the previous two pictures, with a black and white goat standing on the back of the small brown horse.

„Ist das euer Ernst?“ Eine ukrainische Friedensnobelpreisträgerin muss immer wieder Menschen im Ausland davon überzeugen, dass die Ukraine Frieden will. Was @avalaina.bsky.social hier eindrucksvoll beschreibt, ist eine Tragödie und zeigt, wie schief unser Diskurs ist.

After speeding through France at up to 300 km/h for a few hours, I am changing to a small regional train to take me the last 30 or so km to Basel.
As much as I enjoyed #eseb2025, I also look forward to getting home and getting a good nights sleep 😴

The train journey along the Mediterranean between Perpignan and Montpellier is very scenic. I even saw Greater Flamingo’s feeding in the lagoons right beside the rail tracks.

After a 1 h stopover in Valence I get on another TGV, this time an older model, with […]

Since #eseb2027 will be a hub meeting, which should reduce travel distances overall and thus be more environmentally friendly, I thought I’d get into the spirit early. My (not particularly impressive) train journey back home from #eseb2025 starts with a TGV from Barcelona Sants to Valence, France.

Wacholder: unannotated yeast ORFs (19k of them!) tend to be short and lowly expressed, yet 1/3rd can be localised by microscopy. Do they have a function under selection? Check for reading frame conservation between species -> two classes of ORFs, corresponding well to annotations. Only 11 […]

With this the symposium on mechanisms of adaptation to changing conditions in microorganisms 🥵🦠🧬 is over. All talks were really interesting with great speakers.

I am also concluding my live posts. One day was more than enough for me, not sure where @marcrr gets the focus and energy to do this […]

Missimo Amicone from the University of Lausanne talks about resistance evolution in microbial communities. The frequency of evolutionary rescue from antimicrobials in a two-species system usually differs from the respective monocultures. In a polymicrobial UTI model, only three isolates lead to […]

Ricardo Léon-Sampedro from ETH Zurich @usyseth talks about invasion of E. coli into human gut microbiomes. While antibiotics were not necessary for successful invasion, they influenced how the species composition changed after invasion.

Russ Jasper from the University of Bern talks about local adaptation of the gut microbiome to the cecum and rectum. Despite the connectedness of the habitats and the high migration rates, he finds 10 SNPs across 20 species that indicate local adaptation. One particular region shows signs of high […]
