Anyway, right now I'm at a point where Frodo is about to leave the Shire, and what I really like is the gradual escalation from mild preoccupation (Gandalf telling Frodo to be careful with the ring) to a sense of worry, urgency and doom. It just feels very real.

I'm considering reading up to wherever @shire_reckoning is in the books, and then follow its pace to get a sense of how the story's time flows.

Having not read a whole book for way longer than I'm willing to admit, I'm proud to say I've started reading the Lord of the Rings again.

First and last time I read it was about 15 years ago; back then I only knew that it was a fantasy novel about a quest to destroy the dark lord's dangerous […]

[GenAI hate]

The (totally unnecessary) first 4 minutes of this video are pure genius.

Replying to my own message to call all my fellow #outerwilds enthusiasts. The above mentioned game's gameplay is nothing like it, but it had the tiny cozy planet vibes in common ::)

Note to self: try to narrow your target audience down before writing a programming-related blog post — "literally anyone" is a little too wide

@zachweinersmith.bsky.social Very well observed; and yet all math people will still need instantiated examples when learning about a new notion. Though those examples may themselves be abstractions of more concrete things.

Basically I think there's numerous "levels" of Platonism; doing math […]

@zachweinersmith.bsky.social Define "a repeat"... but the answer will most probably be no anyway. You can't tell that a function is periodic without knowing its value for every input.

Exactly my type of game! A cute 3D walking simulator in a tiny ecumenopolis (i.e. a planet-wide city); looks hand-drawn. Runs great on mobile too.

I suspect @konstantinosd would be interested :)

I guess what makes this special is he talks about the whole thing as if he were the chef.

Like, in other shows of this type I've seen, the host will usually give a bit of context (about the restaurant and the chef, their history...), they'll film their reaction to eating the food, and often […]

May I get to be as enthusiastic and captivating about any subject as that show's host is about food:

Ça vous dit quelque chose le fait que quand quelqu'un·e vient vous raconter ses problèmes, des fois iel a besoin de discuter des solutions possibles, et des fois iel a besoin seulement qu'on l'écoute sans proposer de solution ? et que c'est bien d'essayer de sentir (voire demander explicitement) […]

@zachweinersmith.bsky.social Taking your example literally, you're talking about a "vector field": you have a space with "amount of banana/milk/etc." as dimensions (but I assume "goodness" is not one of them?) and at each point in that space, you can assign a value for "goodness". In that […]

Hey someone posted my blog post on #hackernews ! It got a couple interesting comments, sadly I don't have an account there so I can't respond to them 😢

J'ai acheté #hollowknight mais je savais pas que
* Il était si gros
* Il était si difficile
Et moi je suis nul et pas spécialement attiré par la difficulté dans les jeux vidéo 😭

J'hésite à regarder un let's play à la place, je me demande si ça me ferait louper quelque chose

The rarest #tolkien book is probably this joint multilingual collection of poems https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Songs_for_the_Philologists, which was printed privately in 1936 and maybe only 14 copies survived WW2 (the exact number is not known). I believe something like 8 copies are held in […]

Just learnt about the world's largest permanent scale model of the solar system, which takes up all of Sweden's length, making it "only" 20,000,000 smaller than the real deal.

The Sun is figured by the Avicii Arena, the largest spherical building in the world […]

@MartinEscardo I think the truly miraculous thing mathematicians achieved is broad agreement on whether something has been proved. This even seems to be true when the parties involved disagree over what constitutes a proof because there's enough agreement between mathematicians that they can […]
