The focal mechanism just came out (GFZ) shows a strike-slip style, the nearby Baluran Fault north of the epicenter is mapped NE–SW, there might be some complexity, it can be unmapped structure at play, i'lll keep following as more data & local reports come in.

A M5.7 shallow eq hit off the coast near Situbondo, East Java this afternoon. Felt pretty strong in Banyuwangi & Bali, also reported in Lombok, Surabaya, even Madura.  Reports of damage are starting to come in—will keep this thread updated as we learn more. Stay safe, everyone!

I went back and forth to North Sumatra in the past few months, studying the paleoseismology of the Aceh, Seulimeum and Batee Fault of the Sumatran Fault Zone. Do I need to tell you why I love this beautiful place? I'll follow up with more stories!
