Senator Byrd joined the KKK in the 1940s & helped organize a local chapter, serving as its “Exalted Cyclops.” He claimed to have quit by 1943 - though letters show he still spoke favorably of the Klan a few years later. Byrd opposed the 1964 Civil Rights Act & initially aligned with segregationists.
