Saving her friend from this curse is a massive morale boost for Zoe, even if she's not capable of showing it right now because she's mentally and emotionally exhausted. This kind of stuff is what I meant before by her exterior looking worse but her being better off mentally.

Curiously, despite being broken inside, Zoe starts the adventure being pretty chipper and positive, yet as the plot advances she becomes more jaded and abrasive (on top of looking more like shit from combat) yet mentally she's in a better place as she finds new purpose in life.
