I enjoy rendering details but it's easy to trap myself spending hours polishing all the expressiveness away. the real paint gods can slam down like six brushtrokes that convey more shape and movement and character than I can manage in a day of work

dude's super inspirational bc in like 2010 he was king of that heavily-rendered hyper-detailed shiny anime style, but he kept pushing forward and now makes these wild distorted figures with really loose and insanely confident brushwork. it's all incredibly unique and weird as hell lol I love it

(most of the time this just makes reds look more intense than normal. if you've used a windows laptop you've probably seen this. but an image that's *already* extremely saturated can end up looking absolutely radioactive lol)

(if you're unfamiliar with color-gamut stuff: there's a standardized maximum color saturation that most images use. most "HDR" displays are capable of higher saturations. incorrectly-calibrated displays will take normal images and display them at the highest saturation the display can produce)

oh yeah towards the end there I was trying to draw a bikini top inside the shirt but it was a huge pain in the ass so I decided fuck this it's cuter if she just wore a tshirt with nothing under it to the beach anyway. this is known as The Artistic Process

also this was another attempt at skipping the "clean lineart" phase and just flattening the sketch lines right onto the paint. sometimes this goes horribly wrong but I think it worked great here? def made the hands a lot easier to deal with. my brain works better with values than with outlines

didn't record the sketch phase, but just imagine me drawing the worst boob you've ever seen and then hitting ctrl+z and drawing pretty much the same thing and hitting ctrl+z and repeating that for 4-5 hours until I either accidentally drew a good boob or lost the ability to tell the difference
