I'm in Dublin most of the time, the rest of the time I'm in hell. I make and shitpost about films, I shitpost about but do not make music. grattanaikins.com.
Father Ted is such a big deal here in Ireland that his descent into transphobic insanity is particularly depressing to watch. Like its as well known and quoted as prime era Simpsons would be here.

As someone who considers Mononoke his favourite film of all time, part of what makes Miyazaki great is that other than maybe lupin anyone could say any of his films are their top three favourites and I'd go "makes sense". A ponyo, howls, wind rises top three is a good top three.

This is kind of my point: this is a tougher and more complicated thing to pull off than the essay thinks, and there's a reason he can only really mention masterpieces as counter exanples. Furiosa really makes it clear how unbelievable the balancing act of fury road is in hindsight.

A lot of furiosa doesn't look markedly different from fury road but when it slips up it does look completely fake. But it's a reminder that "keeping backgrounds in focus so they're visible" can cause the same problems of a lack of physicality that the essay is decrying.

As a furiosa defender it's a really interesting example of how slippery trying to find a cause for this stuff is, because the worst shots in it are a mixture of awkward framing with really long lenses condensing the frame, which with over saturated images can look muddled

It's a good start and a point for filmmakers to consider when making something but it feels like there's so much more left on the table.

The problem is that the reasons films feel digital and shiny is multifaceted: is it CGI and lack of finances? Yes! And no! Is it lighting and framing choices? Also yes! And also no! You said A Hidden Life doesn't feel the same way though shot digitally, ok, why?
November 19, 2025 at 12:20 PM
I don't need him to solve the problem but as someone who has complained about how poorly modern Hollywood films films are blocked and framed in order it's odd to me that this very basic idea feels deeper and more practical than what this 27 minute video can muster.

Ok, so films feel less realistic in a sensory way and that's part of why they don't look as good. Cool, id broadly agree, so why is that? How does that manifest? What's the solution?
