Gen AI is NEVER ok!!!

There is no ethical use for it. Even if voice actors get some pennies for their voices being cloned, supporting OpenAI is just straight up BBEG behavior. OpenAI is built on mass theft!

Any reliance on gen AI is a credibility destroyer. Avoid it at all costs!

Back from the game design trenches to share something disappointing and to warn people.

I just got an ad for a web service that can turn TTRPG recordings into summarized notes. Nifty!

When the ad talked about adding voice-over I got suspicious. After some digging...

Shadows don't attack out of a need to feed. Rather, they possess an "inescapable craving" for the vital essence of the living. A Shadow that doesn't indulge this craving is driven to madness.

Creatures killed by a Shadow may have their own shadows rise in undeath, bound in service to their killer.

This Strength Drain plus a Shadow's greater movement speed, Stealth and movement bonuses, and numerous damage resistances make them uncommonly strong during surprise attacks, especially at low levels.

A group of Shadows can quickly overpower even a higher level party if caught unprepared!

While a shadow has low stats overall in D&D 5E, it is still a deadly threat. Its Strength Drain can lower its victim's Strength score, killing them outright if it reaches 0. For some players this could take as few as two attacks!

Shadows are aptly named, resembling vaguely humanoid shadows and living in the dark, forgotten places of the world. Shadows can be found anywhere, from ancient ruins to the dingy alleys of great metropolitan cities. They hide in wait and attack unsuspecting travelers, commonly in small groups.

Welcome to Monster Mondays! Every Monday we'll be exploring a different undead monster in D&D. Today we're taking a look at the Shadow!

Shadows are that rare type of monster that is weak (CR 1/2) but also incredibly dangerous, capable of killing seasoned adventurers of all levels!

Looking at a Death Tyrant's abilities, it's very much "beholder, but more." All the same eye rays, just with higher DCs and dealing more damage.

Unlike a Beholder Zombie, a Death Tyrant retains a beholder's central eye cone. But instead of antimagic, it halts healing and creates undead!

Speaking of older editions, check out this old Death Tyrant art! Still scary, but much closer to our current depictions of Beholder Zombies. The 5e art has a greater sense of eldritchness, but this older depiction can be great for DMs that want to trick players that are familiar with Death Tyrants!
April 21, 2025 at 10:57 PM
This is the only way a Death Tyrant is born. But that wasn't always the case! In Third Edition, an Elder Orb (essentially an ancient beholder) could create and control them with its magic. But that hasn't been seen in modern D&D yet.

A beholder's dreams have strange power. If a beholder is dreaming about itself, it can spawn another beholder that is its exact copy. If it dreams about blood, it could spawn a Death Kiss.

When a beholder dreams about dying, the dream can grab hold. Its flesh rots, transforming it in its sleep.

Welcome to Monster Mondays! Every Monday we'll be exploring a different undead monster in D&D. Today we're looking at the Death Tyrant!

Death Tyrants are undead beholders, but aren't the result of your typical necromancer's magic. That would be the Beholder Zombie, which is much weaker

Well it turns out Bluesky doesn't like transparency! And so 80% of the details are missing DX

Please take a look at THIS version of the logo instead!

And last, but certainly not least, is the Sangromancy Wizard by @catsket.bsky.social!

We wanted to evoke similar gothic imagery as Bloodborne, and Kat was perfect for it. The twisting, flowing blood forms an eldritch halo, drawing you in to the wizard's piercing gaze!

The key art for our Shadows Warlock was done by @ekivt.bsky.social!

We needed this Warlock to represent something intangible like the Sorcerer, but in an opposite sense. The way their form seems to dissipate like smoke is expertly contrasted with their hungry eyes and eager smile.

The Ghostfire Sorcerer was made by @grimgrowls.bsky.social!

The concept of intangible "ghostfire" is difficult to bring to life, but Terra knocked it out of the park. Looking just as gorgeous as they do mysterious, this Elf is as ethereal and stunning as the magic they wield.

The Deathbringer Rogue was superbly crafted by @ceresartwork.bsky.social!

The composition had several elements that were outside of Ceres's comfort zone, but they rose to the challenge and obliterated it! This Dwarf is equal parts suave and menacing, and we love everything about him.

Our Blood Artist Ranger was made by @actualdeerooze.bsky.social!

The outfit design and detailing is incredible! We see more details every time we look, to say nothing of gorgeous fur of the Tabaxi themselves.

The Oath of the Blackguard Paladin was brought to life by the one and only @skullysinful.bsky.social!

As one of the most evil-aligned subclasses, we needed the art to have the kind of manic aura of a super villain, and it was a total success! Skully makes being evil look *really* good.
February 25, 2025 at 1:29 AM
Another entry in the "could kill you with a glance but that would be too easy" category is the Way of Blight Monk by @squidneysketches.bsky.social!

We wanted to capture the arrogance and ill-intent of classic martial arts villains, and Squidney pulled it off in spades.
February 25, 2025 at 1:29 AM
Continuing the trend of "look to experts to get expert results," @striga.bsky.social was our first and best choice in making a Gnoll for our Grave Knight Fighter!

This battle-hardened veteran just oozes murderous intent, every nick in their blade the sign of a brutal battle won.
February 25, 2025 at 1:29 AM
Like with the minotaur, the moment we decided on a satyr to represent the Circle of Rot Druid, there was nobody else we could possibly go to other than @mageartz.bsky.social!

And they absolutely delivered! Being draped in death like a mantle, this druid makes dying almost look good!
February 25, 2025 at 1:29 AM
When you want goblin art, you go to a goblin artist. We're so happy we were able to work with @apple.vtubers.social for our Spirits Domain Cleric!

This goblin cleric's soothing smile and welcoming eyes perfectly represent the Spirits Cleric's ability to shield and protect their allies.

Our College of Souls Bard was completed by @sanji-chwan.bsky.social!

Arrie's fairy bard is just as ethereal and enchanting as the magic this subclass brings to the battlefield. The details are beautiful, and the the longer you look the more it seems to hypnotize you!
February 25, 2025 at 1:29 AM
The Path of the Haunted Barbarian was completed by @mariosack.bsky.social!

We wanted a wide mix of different fantasy races to represent the Graverobber's Guide, and when we decided on a minotaur we knew immediately we needed Mario to do it, and they blew us away!
