Neo-Calvinism is a critical advancement of the Reformed tradition within the context of late modernity. I’ll focus most of my posts on news in relation to this tradition and other interests of mine in modern and Reformed theology, analytic theology, and Bavinck studies especially.
For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus…

For we hold that one is justified by faith apart from works of the law. - Rom. 3:23-4, 28

Happy Reformation Day!

The notion of God has been inscribed on the human soul as a first truth and a first principle - Leiden Synopsis, 1. 6. 4.

I take my book on the Sense of the Divine as a kind of elaboration on this passage from the Synopsis.

Something often missed: for Kuyper, Calvinism’s confession of God’s sovereignty is fitting with and grounds representational democracy (and points to America). The ‘every square inch’ quote is no ground for theonomy. If Jesus is Lord, then no mere human or Christian can be.

Why is penal substitutionary atonement (or the wrath of God) good news? I was quoted here, with Good Friday coming up:

Why did Jesus die? Churches grapple with the mystery of atonement
(RNS) — In recent decades, some Christians have moved away from the theory of penal substitutionary atonement, which summons up the idea of an angry God who needs to be appeased.

The doctrine of common grace logically presupposes the doctrine of the antithesis - without the antithesis common grace is superfluous and does no explanatory work, for it is the redemptive-historical epoch that suspends the eschatological culmination of the antithesis.

We thirst for another world... By way of a reaction to it, materialism evokes spiritualism. But the spiritism in which this spiritualism today manifests itself in the lives of many people is nothing other than a new form of superstition.
