Reminds me of a project that had to satisfy a requirement of a contact specifying the solution needed to use machine learning.

We found a linear regression model that worked well enough, and made sure we never clarified beyond "supervised machine learning implementation" in the docs.

Interesting read. I do enjoy surprises in sufficiently powered well conducted research as they often elucidate the presence of previously unknown mechanisms.

Regarding science reporting , I wish the article had direct citations for the studies and links to relevant publications.
