All Saints, Sutton on Trent.

Am I imagining a face carved among the medieval graffiti in the porch?

Zoom in.

And this is the site of Pennymuir roman fort. Some of the ramparts are preserved and the animals have done some archaeology! See the stratigraphy 😅

The green line is the route of Dere Street and the red is the site of Pennymuir roman fort.

Thanks for sticking with this thread.

Hope you get a chance to visit this wonderful landscape yourself one day.

Marked on my map as simply 'fort' it is mind-blowing to stumble across it.

This is it from the south, and then from the west in the rain 6/n

Then along the valley is Moat Knowe hillfort. Thrilled to learn it is a 'citadel hillfort', like out of Lord of the Rings.

This is made up of several linked and terraced enclosures built up a steep sided outcrop.

It has an orthostat-bordered entrance track curving up from the valley floor 5/n

An unrelated surprise nearby is a shieling, still in use!

All the features are there.

A large ovoid enclosure high on the hills with adjacent accommodation and even livestock management.

Usually these are just outlines and lumps and bumps but this one is real

There are a lot of deep ditches on the southern side of the hillfort. Some still 2m deep to this day 3/n

Nearby is Woden Law Hillfort.

Famous because it may have been used for training Roman troops in siege warfare. The Pennymuir roman fort is just across the valley along Dere Street.

Fascinating to see the Romans and Britons there together. You can walk from one to the other 3/n

Here we are on Dere Street as it comes down off the Cheviots towards the Roman stronghold of Trimontium in the Scottish Borders.

You can see the three hills on the horizon 2/n

For #hillfortswednesday here's a thread about Dere Street, the early Romans and the hillforts in the north Cheviots 1/n

There's an ad on TV for a new reality show about lying where a bloke says he only pretends to be into cycling because he's banned from driving.

Here he is compared to a non-cyclist.

Something tells me he's definitely genuinely into bikes!

I can't help thinking of this quote by Norman Cohn.

Does teaching children road safety have "the biggest impact" on reducing danger?

Or is it proper enforcement of laws on speeding, carelessness, phone use, and drugs and alcohol?

7/7 End.

And how did I miss this? A rectilinear moated medieval settlement.

There's much more in this square kilometre of farmland; cairns, banks, stone alignments and possible water management features.

The Threestoneburn stone circle isn't far away either.
