I open a new thread for the series "Proverb of the day" that I used to post in another platform. For completeness, I will repeat in Bluesky many of the past ones. Apologies if they sound repetitive to some of you.

🚨 How do collective behaviours (high-order interdependencies) *emerge*❓

Can systems with low-order interactions do it?
What do these minimal synergistic systems look like?

In arxiv.org/abs/2505.246... we show when and how synergies emerge when no high-order mechanisms are involved.

Short 🧵: 1/N
Synergistic Motifs in Gaussian Systems
High-order interdependencies are central features of complex systems, yet a mechanistic explanation for their emergence remains elusive. Currently, it is unknown under what conditions high-order inter...

Academic authors, here's a peek into the black box of journal publishing from an journal editor if you can bear it:

It broke my heart to see some of you (very talented, hard-working and capable ones) compelled to give up academia. You will always have a friend here. And to those who keep floating, I hope you will remain as collaborators, one way or another.

Gus, gracias por todo !

Many thanks to everyone at the CBC: the PIs (who make it happen, often sailing against the winds), the staff (who make it work) and, of course, to the dozens of post-docs and students that passed by the center along these years. It was very enriching to share this time with you.

It is also the moment to send a big “thank you” to Gustavo Deco and the
@cbc-upf.bsky.social. I went to Barcelona for two years, and this turned into an adventure of twelve !! What a ride, what a rollercoaster !! 😁

📢 I am delighted to announce that from Oct. 1st I will join the Institute of Computer Science (@ics-cas.bsky.social), of The Czech Academy of Sciences (@czechacademy.bsky.social).

I am very much looking forward to this new chapter in my career and life, and to work with my new colleagues.

We introduce curved neural networks naturally introducing high-order interactions showing:
• explosive phase transitions
• enhanced memory retrieval via self-annealing
• increased memory capacity through geometric curvature
Explosive neural networks via higher-order interactions in curved statistical manifolds - Nature Communications
Higher-order interactions shape complex neural dynamics but are hard to model. Here, authors use a generalization of the maximum entropy principle to introduce a family of curved neural networks, reve...

Can the structure of knowledge evolve like life itself?

In our new MBE paper, we show that the Gene Ontology evolves through mechanisms shared with cultural and technological systems—reuse, modularity, and curator-driven restructuring.

Here’s what we found: 🧵

Homeorhetic regulation of cellular phenotype
How cells translate growth factor (GF) signals into context-specific phenotypes remains a fundamental question in cell biology. The classical view holds that cells translate a constant concentration o...

And more surprisingly, we found that subcortical structures are internally heterogeneous; some ROIs locally connected while other ROIs play central role in global communication.

In fact, we found that all subcortical structures (not only the thalamus) contribute some ROIs to the global rich-club !
Contrary to our expectations (we thought maybe the thalamus would take the center of the network) we found that all subcortical structures uniformly contribute ROIs to the global rich-club.
