wasn't jealous of their 100-hour runtime until I saw what "The Naval Ordinance Research Calculator" actually looked like and now I am actually Very Jealous

💫 @philip-armitage.bsky.social shared a paper from 1965 which first showed numerically that Neptune and Pluto are in a 3:2 resonance. This integration took 100 hours on the Naval Ordinance Research Calculator.

🎉💫 We had another paper accepted last week. Garett Brown was the lead on this one. We study the effect of a substellar flyby on the Solar System and find that there is a surprisingly high probability that such a flyby could have played an important role in shaping the system's architecture.

Doug Ford cancelled green energy projects as one of his first actions. Now he’s subsidizing hydro rebates to the tune of $8 BILLION. Our money.
Australia has so much electricity from solar power that it is going to start offering free electricity to everyone for at least three hours during the day as the wholesale price of power goes negative

Just noticed that the Budget calls for Canada to join Eurovision. Like we are never going to get the points, guys. Unless we join the Eastern European block.

Thursday is my hands-on statistics lecture. We'll first make some fresh popcorn. We record the time it takes for individual kernels to pop and use that to talk about the central limit theorem.

The astrophotographer I worked with earlier this month, Jeanine Holowatiuk https://www.instagram.com/jeanine.holowatuik/ https://northernescapephotography.com/about/ sent me some horrifying (Halloween-levels of scary) time lapse movies she took of Comet Lemmon.

Why horrifying? Starlink.

The Ford Brothers have a long record of acting against Ontario’s Conservation Authorities. This is troubling.
The province is creating the Ontario Provincial Conservation Agency (OPCA) to "provide centralized leadership, efficient governance, strategic direction and oversight of all conservation authorities." Some conservation authorities will be consolidated, but the province insists no jobs will be lost.

My work week started at 4am this Monday as I was invited to give a talk at the #ChaICA6 (IAU Commission B1 - Computational Astrophysics - Challenges and Innovations in Computational Astrophysics VI). The meeting is being held in Mohali (India) but I gave the talk remotely (middle of teaching term).

I need some blue hive mind help: Is there a *very easy* to use amateur telescope (think @unistellar.bsky.social evscope, or seestar) that can be used for spectroscopy?

🔭☄️ By the way, the #interstellar #comet 3I/2025 N1 (ATLAS) is on my free Bright Comets #iOS app, in case you want to know where it is right now. Spoiler: it's still very faint at 16 mag. But it should brighten up to 12 mag by October.
