i noticed this too while grabbing my sources! but on parade day, Hua Cheng appears to be 10 years old as well? (chapter 68).

I’ve mulled over this “when people hung me up to beat me" line A LOT. Was he talking about being abused as a kid? Was he talking about Qi Rong beating him? No. Because his reason for living is Xie Lian and his worst fear is not being able to protect him. (chapter 108)

This line in chapter 120 on Black Water’s island, really stuck with me. I think it’s overshadowed by “the state of you” line. But remember those reinforcements we never see after Xie Lian leaves the temple in chapter 82? I think Hua Cheng died trying to prevent Xie Lian’s temple from burning.

Xie Lian leaves before we can see the reinforcements these guys bring. We get Hua Cheng's famous line in this chapter (82). Likely Xie Lian asking Hua Cheng to forget him is the reason why Hua Cheng had such a strong will to remain in this world.

After he’s booted from the army, we meet Hua Cheng one more time in the same chapter (82) at the temple where he is fiercely trying to protect it from being burnt down. He fights off these guys and they promise to come back with reinforcements. The book says they were empty threats…but was it?

In chapters 82 and 176, we have proof that Hua Cheng was no longer in the army after Beizi Hill incident. Therefore, no longer on the battlefield.

Why was Hua Cheng found on the battlefield? I think he was gathering up dead soldier spirits to try to motivate them to reform an army for Xie Lian. We see him do something similar in chapter 188, where Hua Cheng is trying to protect Xie Lian from entering a Bad Situation

Later in chapter 181, huahua recites “To die in battle for you is my greatest honour” a common phrase said by soldiers in the Xianle army. Xie Lian assumes he’s a soldier because of what the elder said and this phrase. He’s not wrong! Hua Cheng WAS a soldier. That’s just not where he died.

So, where did the fandom consensus come from? In Chapter 181, an elder selling little ghost lanterns says he got the ghosts from a “barren battlefield”.
