We've been listening to both of these groups to build a marketplace where artists can share their music and their stories more holistically, and where fans (curators) can purchase something unique and share their favorites with others. A combination of ecommerce and non-algorithmic social. (4/5)

Generally, independent artists have said they feel either:

a) forced into completing the checklists laid out by these platforms in order to get any form of reach and exposure (including to reach their existing fans)

OR

b) compelled to opt out of the streaming/social landscape

Some quick thoughts on what we've learned after all of these artist conversations:

Going into this, we knew indie artists weren't happy with the current music landscape. What surprised us was the level of discontent - particularly around streaming and social media. (2/5)

Has the role of the critic changed over time? Harmonic's @jefito.com makes the case that music reviewers' jobs are now to act as sherpas rather than critics. What do you think?

A core part of Harmonic is our recommendation system, in which curators write recs for the music they love. We specifically call these “recommendations” not “reviews” because the role of curators should be to elevate art that connects with them, not discourage art that they don’t connect with.
