“Captain,” Spock murmurs as they filed into a loose formation, crossing a threshold into a corridor that held far more natural beauty than the architectural wonder they’d just left behind. Chris offers him a look sidelong as they both match pace wordlessly, slowing enough for a few of the other members of the envoy to pass them. “What attributes does the D’harixhol rite of passage include?” This was Spock’s way of politely asking what the heck it is they were volunteered into. Chris, for his part, also wonders as much. He lets that thought show on his face, and Spock’s takes on the passive indifference as is his standard- but Chris is willing to bet hides some annoyance underneath. “The only attribute I know of is its mystery.” If stoic neutrality could phaser, Chris would have been a sure target. He smirks briefly, a bit of apology in his expression before he turns his attention back to where they are headed.

Thwack. The sound of the axe embedding into the bulkier, older tree stump that Chris’ neighbors use to chop wood is muted in the long yard by the endless blanket of white surrounding it. Chris exhales, the act causing a small cloud of condensation to blossom in front of him. He wouldn’t be surprised if he was steaming. Despite the chill of mid-afternoon under heavy cloud cover, Chris had been chopping wood for their fireplaces long enough to work up a sweat. His chest rises and falls rapidly while he catches his breath, peeling the henley he’d been wearing off over his head in an attempt to balance out his temperature. It only partially works. “Anaïs! Put those away and go help Naahsa with the gathering!” Andre’s voice rises over the yard from his position at the entrance to their barn, only sticking his head out long enough to ensure that his daughter was following directions. A small huff of amusement escapes Chris at the sight of her scrambling to chase after one of the dogs, who’d taken her attempt to rally him as an invitation to play. He turns away from the sight, henley still in hand. The greenhouse Chris approaches is in its second iteration, expanded since the last time he’d gone planetside. It’s probably a good thing, considering how little seemed to survive the harsh Montana winters. Bracing himself for a creaking that doesn’t occur, he inspects the door as it closes behind him, impressed. Somewhere in this place is his partner. It does not take long to locate Spock, one of only two other people inside the greenhouse, bent over a row of leafy, narrow plants. He nods solemnly, nimble gloved fingers working to pluck sprig after sprig of the stuff at a pace that suggests far more practice than he had time to achieve. A honeyed brown gaze turns to the elderly woman next to him, finely sculpted brow arcing high on his face. The moment stretches on as Chris distractedly puts a boot atop of one of the crates near the tool wall, leaning to rest his forearms atop his knee to watch. Then, Andre’s elderly mother breaks into a bright, boisterous laugh, the sound carrying. Whatever words they had exchanged is lost on Chris, whose lips pull into an endeared smile. Spock’s expression betrayed little, but Chris is willing to bet that when he turns his head back to the task before him there is just the tiniest quirk at the corner of his mouth. He admires the way that his shortly cropped hair juts out from the edge of his hat, a little longer than it had been when Spock had arrived at Chris’ door, curling around the lobe of a pointed ear otherwise carefully hidden beneath the woolen fabric. His posture is perfect when he straightens, basket in one hand while the other arm is offered to Naahsa for stability. They walk a few paces in the other direction, resettling farther down the line of planter boxes. Chris allows himself to be lulled by the moment, content to watch Spock collecting herbs for the evening’s dinner along with a selection for teas that they all would ultimately use through the season’s bend into thaw. He remains there for an unknown stretch of time, far and away from a chronometer or even the shy appearance of the winter sun. By chance- or perhaps he’d known Chris was there the whole time- Spock’s gaze lifts from the basket, over the countless rows of herbs to meet Chris’. He freezes, muscles tensing briefly as heat floods his face, caught. Spock’s lashes flutter, gaze turning towards the ground briefly before meeting Chris’ once again. Oh, he’s beautiful. A corresponding warmth blooms in Chris’ chest, filling his ribcage and making him want to cross the greenhouse to take Spock’s face between his hands. Spock eventually turns back to what he’d been doing. Chris draws the back of one arm across his forehead, wiping some of the sweat from it, finding it all the more noticeable as his body temperature balances out. He passes the henley to the other hand, resuming his admiration from afar. It lasts just long enough for Chris to get comfortable before a teasing call startles him from his reverie. “Aaaahaa nita’kaawa-!” Andre laughs, bringing in a couple of large bags of soil to set next to the tool wall. “You’ve got it bad.” Chris chuckles sheepishly, free hand raising to drag a palm across the back of his neck. A look is cast Spock’s way, finding him already looking this time. His smile spreads marginally while they regard one another from across the enclosed space. “Caught me,” Chris admits, straightening and finally turning to face Andre for a moment. “It’s a good look on you,” Andre grins, long braid slipping from the side of his shoulder to his back as he raises from his stooped position, the soil neatly arranged near a couple of other bags. “Yeah, well,” Chris bridges awkwardly, face burning once more. This is silly, he’s not a school aged boy with his first crush any longer. Somehow the thought doesn’t do anything towards abating the sensation. “Don’t stay out here too long like that, you’ll catch a cold.” Chis nods, reaching up and over his head to stretch some of his upper back muscles. He leans with it, holding the position for a handful of seconds and switching to the other arm.
