RIP Quincy Jones, not just a great film composer, producer, etc. but also the only person who had the savvy to record a version of a song inspired by an X-Rated art film directed by Nagisa Oshima and take it into top 10 on the US R&B charts & #1 in Japan

I made a list of every feature film I saw when I was living in Chiang Mai, Thailand in 1999-2000. Wish I’d been more adventurous in watching Thai films and others without English subtitles, but it’s a snapshot of my cinematic diet at the time.

Last 3 weekends of the all-35mm @StanfordTheatre’s film noir + Val Lewton horror season. Tonight’s pairing of Curse of the Cat People/Night of the Hunter is ingenious & exquisite. (I’ve seen both at the Stanford & prefer their audience to others for these delicate masterpieces).

I wrote more than expected on an obscure horror B-movie that almost nobody I follow on Letterboxd has logged:

R.I.P. cinematographer Dick Pope. His work with Mike Leigh was tremendous, but if you haven’t seen the bizarre 1990 horror film he shot, The Reflecting Skin, it’s available to view via Hoopla and Kanopy, both of which you have access to via a San Francisco Public Library Card.

Leaving the Criterion Channel at the end of the month: an all-time great San Francisco documentary from the early 1990s that I ought to have seen decades ago, and am so thankful I finally got around to.

It seems there are still tickets available to @MOViES4MANiACS’ tribute to James Earl Jones at the @balboatheatresf tonight! One of the best Twilight Zone episodes and the rarely-seen (especially in a decent copy) made-for-tv movie The Man, both via 16mm:
