BlueSky re-intro! 📚💙

I'm Hel, astrophysicist & author of sci-fi, fantasy, and all that's speculative.

✨ currently residing in rainy, rainy Wales
✨ bookworm, slight nerd, very online, very tired, still somewhat hopeful
✨ love cooking, cross-stitching, D&D, video games, my kitty Puddle, and space

🧵
Helyna stands with her back to a slightly overexposed window holding her book, Skylark in the Fog, smiling. She is a woman in her thirties with blond hair and glasses in a green shirt. The book has a spacey cover with a bright blue foggy tear in spacetime and a spaceship zooming towards the viewer. A tortoiseshell kitty lying in her bed, looking up very cutely. The cat bed is grey and has an English flag patterned blanket in it.

I got my first review for METROPOLIS DOWN and I don't know if it can be beat.
Image shows a scifi border graphic in a pale, muted purple surrounding text.

Top text is in the same pale, muted purple, and says REVIEW

Text below is smaller and in white, and says: “METROPOLIS DOWN is haunting, horrible, fascinating, and deeply romantic. It gave me the faith to reconnect with romance in my life by modeling mutual patience with trauma healing in relationships. All against a backdrop of space gore. A very special book.”

A new peek into Untwined if anyone dares! 👀 A somber one, too.
We circled the room once, twice, three times, me leaning on Aesh but mostly using my own strength to move. Trying to find my home in my battered body again; re-inhabiting a house that was once familiar, now empty and crumbling.
“How long have I been in here?” I asked after finishing in the water closet and scrubbing at my skin for long minutes in the attached small bathroom to get rid of the sticky, blood-soaked dirt covering my whole body. I was disgusting. At the same time, vaguely happy that I was lucid enough to worry about such things.
“Five days,” Aesh replied. Shame flared up in their eyes, but they could have said any number, I would have believed it. It felt like years. It felt like a single, long night. “I’m sorry.”
	“Please, stop saying you’re sorry.”
	“Alright.”

I haven't been around a lot these days, but guess what. I have books!

If you like stories featuring lost, trauma-riddled almost-adults searching for home and finding it in each other, searching for agency and trudging through messy pain to grasp it, I write that.

A trope map for Skylark in the Fog by Helyna L. Clove.

The cover of the book featuring starry background, a bright blue, foggy rift in space shaped like a bird taking flight, and a small spaceship zooming out of it is in the middle. Around it, labels with arrows:

- a prickly space pirate with commitment issues
- a runaway queen with AI powers
- a half-brainwashed soldier trying to find himself
- shady galactic empire vs rebels
- wormhole machine shenanigans
- cute robots & alien BFFs
- Star Wars and Firefly vibes with awesome women and strong platonic bonds
- the cycle of hate and war, the meaning of home
- humanity sucks
- humanity rules
- a swashbuckling adventure, now with extra trauma! (and perhaps healing) A trope map for Imbued by Helyna L. Clove.

The cover of the book featuring a lush scene with green-purple vegetation of leaves and thorny stalks surrounding a while calla lily which is grasped by golden, magical threads and being pulled towards the ground, is in the middle. Labels with arrows are around it:

- childhood trauma-induced amnesia
- VERY reluctant hero (crossed out) villain (crossed out) ???
- manipulation
- failed magic experiments and dead gods
- telepathic flirting
- queernormative society
- demisex romance (slowburn no spice)
- dreams & visions galore
- "I am a weapon" Digital art of the three main characters of Skylark in the Fog by @nightshading on Twitter.

Jeane Blake is on the left, a tall, blonde, white woman in her twenties. Her hair is in a ponytail, and she's wearing a brown leather jacket that's slightly big for her, green cargo pants, and a white shirt. And also a gun holster and an unfriendly grimace on her face.

Maura Tholis is in the middle. She is a short, curvy, brown-skinned woman with light brown hair in two buns and on her shoulders. She is wearing a long red sleeveless dress. On her left hand, there is a high-tech looking black glove with blue lights on it. Her expression is kind.

Roy Philemon is on the right. He is a skinny white, short brown-haired man also in his late twenties. He's wearing a black jacket, grey T-shirt, and brown cargo pants. He's got some stubble on his face and he's holding a gun in his left hand sort of non-chalantly. The two main characters of Imbued by Helyna L. Clove, digital art by Talli Morgan. A man and a woman stand facing each other on blue-green background. The woman, Calla, has brown skin and long auburn, wavy hair. She's wearing a long-sleeved, loose green tunic with golden embroidery on the sleeves. She's holding out her palms and concentrating on a small sphere of light hovering above her fingers with a stark expression. The man, Gray, has brown skin, black, mid-length, wavy hair, and he's wearing a black long-sleeved jacket. His hands are hovering around Calla's, focusing on the light sphere as well, but he's really looking at her with a gentle expression.

This month should be the final stretch of First Aid Revisions on Untwined, sequel to my dark fantasy Imbued, in order to bring it to a beta reader-ready state.

Gone through Chapter 14 today and liked it. That's good! 🤞🤞

Plan? I've got no plan. I'm embracing the chaos.

The ALT text helps a lot tbh, please read, thank you.

Y'all. y'all. have I ever shown you the Diagram I made for the magic stuff in Untwined 😭😭🫠🫠

Redacted some stuff because spoilers, also, small spoilers for Imbued's world, and also not everything is Perfectly correct anymore, because.........logic (😭😭) but

isn't it beautiful
Oh goodness, please don't ask me to ALT text this.

Okay I'll try. It's a hand-drawn diagram of sorts about the "magic system" in my books Imbued and Untwined. The basic setup is that on the top there are orange swirling lines depicting the Ae, which is from where all magical potential (=life energy) comes into the material world. The Ae is labeled as "pure energy", "movement", "potential", "action but static in itself? potential for action". There are vertical orange lines coming from the swirly Ae towards the middle of the page. On their ends, there are little spheres. These symbolize every living thing's magical source and their connection to the Ae. There's a label that says "a mage is able to manipulate life energy and the world with it". And also that the connections have "determined width and capacity, but can be extended with imbuing to a point". The lines of connections are at the same time also arrows pointing down towards the bottom of the page where there is a dark blue "sea" of sorts". The arrows are labelled with "constant pull" and "passive". One little sphere is depcted to fall down into this sea, leaving a little sploosh after it, the sea protruding like when you drop a stone into water. It's labeled as "when someone dies, their material returns [REDACTED], consciousness survives (sometimes) with life energy that returns to the Ae. death = stops resisting, bunch of energy frees". The sploosh is important. There's also a section where a bunch of spheres are depicted as falling down and it's labeled as "corrupted zones, lots of people dying (or imbued)" and that makes a huge sploosh from that sea. There's a big sphere on the right which has a name that's reducted. It's depicted in the process of falling down and the sploosh continually coming up. It's labelled as "letting go of the Ae, controlled fall, "potential" gain, can use immense energy until death". And also "negative action, magic & its antithesis both".

I promise, it's all very cool.

looks like he may not be a bad boy magekiller after all...or, at least, not entirely. There's also a mage rebellion going on, and its leader has connections both to Gray and Calla's forgotten past. And in the sequel we go deep into some pretty ancient and esoteric magic lore and stuff, it's cool.
helynalc.bsky.social
the rich family's firstborn son, Gray (also mage, but recruited into a magehunter) suddenly returns home and discovers Calla's powers. Interestingly, however, he doesn't kill or capture her, instead, as her power starts to become more and more violent, offers to teach her to handle it. And it also
helynalc.bsky.social
Kamphua therefore persecutes (hunts) mages now, to not repeat the past. My MC here is Calla, at the beginning of the story a servant in a rich family's palace. She has magic, but she's hiding it, and she also kinda doesn't remember her childhood years for some reason. Things start to happen when

bad at AIing, and such.

My other universe is a dark fantasy, composed of the book Imbued and its sequel-to-be-released, Untwined. This takes place on a continent with one dominant country, the Kamphua Dominion, founded on the ruins of a more ancient one, which destroyed itself with magic.
