文章合为时而著,歌诗合为事而作。

It is a truism that outsiders appreciate hallowed ground much more than locals. I remember, way back in '87 when I met my first Missourian, that I was shocked to learn they had no appreciation of being from the same state as Sam Clemens, and that his […]

A top down photo of a diorama at the Mark Twain Birthplace museum, holding all the wealth Tom Sawyer accumulated while outsourcing the painting of the wall:
• Ben's half-eaten apple
• A dead rat on a string
• Twelve marbles
• A jaw harp
• Blue glass to look through
• A bottle stopper
• A tin soldier
• A brass doorknob
• A dog collar without a dog
• A knife with no blade
• A kitten with only one eye

Day 9: Eniko Fox

We're back to videogames, and with another author who's on the fediverse: @eniko

Fox has developed a few games, but the one that I've played and love is Kitsune Tails. It's a sapphic romance take on Super Mario Bros. 3, and (critically for a platformer) it's got very crisp […]

[Black widow #spider]

@JosephTLapp Confirmed it's a Black Widow female living in this. Any good options other than hoping the local lizards manage to catch her?
A rain chain bucket with a thick unkempt web. A cicada shell is stuck in it. Next to it is a very fat female black widow spider hanging upside down, its red hourglass clearly visible.

Let's take a look at the sample field for Viking 1 - the area within reach of the sampler arm. This image from a USGS Professional Paper shows the sample field at the start of the mission and at the end of the primary mission […]

Viking 1 imaged its sample field - the area within reach of its arm. A link in the post goes to a contemporary drawn map of the field but this image is a photomap made by projecting images onto the drawn map. This map has north at the top. Rocks and other features are given fanciful names like Grumpy and Sandy Flats. The area which the arm could reach is outlined in white.

WOW. Tonight with distant bonus lightning too!!! I am so spoiled.

Haha ok that went great, but had to end on a real bummer with talking about satellite pollution. Plus I got a question from Alan Stern that wasn't just yelling at me for saying "Planet 9" in a presentation so I think that counts as success (he wanted to know more details about the neat 10:1 TNO […]

Stitch pasted in from the Wikipedia article, and a really poor attempt to outline "stitch" in the nebula.
hendric.astronomy.city.ap.brid.gy
Hmm, this nebula doesn't have a name, I'm thinking Stitch Nebula in honor of Lilo & Stitch. Or maybe the Jerboa Nebula? It's right next to the Bubble nebula, which gets all the press. The bright spot in the middle doesn't even have a designation in the World […]

Wot’s going on here?

We left some stuff wrapped up in a *blue* tarp on the back paved area for a bit over a year. We have some medium sized back birds who live in our garden and spend most of their time digging up the mulch and making a general mess of the garden […]

Just set up a small wearables exhibit for this weekend's #bayareamakerfaire. I'll be giving workshops today and a talk tomorrow as well, so it's going to be a (fun) busy weekend!

Finally aligned a free night with clear skies and no moon. @catherineryanhyde Going to try for NGC6781 and maybe the Helix nebula if I can stay up that late.
Astrophotography setup at night in my neighborhood in front of a bunch of houses. A laptop is taking image captures. Closeup of the laptop screen, showing a heavily washed out picture of NGC6781, a small planetary nebula. It is mostly a blue circle with a red edge highlight.

So Mariner 9 data produced four sites, prime and backup for each lander. But Viking had much better cameras and would have to certify them as safe. The very first pictures of the A1 site were fascinating... much too fascinating to be confident about landing […]

I’m out walking Odin and it just hit me like a ton of bricks that the reason the dummies in these stories are so specifically from the Kingdom of Chu (a real place) is that Chu 楚 literally means “clear, readily apparent”
