Today was a day for native plants with maroon flowers. I found my way back to a wonderful group of Paeonia californica, California Peony. Stunning and lush during the Spring on dry slopes.

Nature sketch walk yesterday with group of sketchers. The ceanothus smells heavenly. Lots of European bees. The native bees don’t seem to be out yet. Watercolor pencil and pen. I threw in some words that came to me.

Ramalina menziesii, lace lichen. Pattern unlike any other lichen in NAmerica. Lace lichen is an important food source for deer in the Calif Coast Range, and nest material for birds.
Recognize as the state lichen of California, the first lichen so honored.
