Music, movies and the occasional bit of TV. Sometimes those intersect with other aspects of life.
The Specialist (1994)
Director: Luis Llosa

This is one of those wonderful situations where a couple of actors think they are in a great movie and one guy knows he is in a bad movie. So much unintentional comedy here that it becomes a fun watch. The poster is almost as funny as the movie.

Cinema Paradiso (1988)
Director: Giuseppe Tornatore

I’ve owned this for years and only just gotten around to watching it. I should have done so when I bought it. What a fabulous film. A real one for lovers of film.

Better Man (2024)
Director: Michael Gracey

Boy I really did not like this movie. It looks great and sounds great but the use of the CGI monkey in the Robbie Williams part did not work for me at all.

Green Room (2015)
Director: Jeremy Saulnier

I had seen Green Room before but I remember being very distracted at the time and didn’t really absorb it so consider this a first time watch. What a great little film for its genre. Not for the faint hearted.

The Big Chill (1983)
Director: Lawrence Kasdan

Never really knew what this film was about. A lot going on here but to be honest I didn’t really enjoy any of it. Every single character here is unlikeable and their plot lines are stupid. I don’t believe any of these people would actually be friends.

Urban Legend (1998)
Director: Jamie Blanks

It’s quite stunning how this film looks so good but is so bad.

If you see this, post an album cover with a motor vehicle on it.

Part way through Urban Legend. It’s crazy how good this looks and also how bad it is.

Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere (2025)
Director: Scott Cooper

Feels like Cooper wasn’t real sure what he wanted to do here. When he does one thing it’s quite enjoyable. When he does the other it falls super flat. Jeremy Allen White is good but he can’t save it.

Remembering Lou Reed today on the anniversary of his death.

American Ninja might be the most unintentionally funny movie I have ever seen. So bad but so watchable.

Watching Dead Ringers for the first time tonight. Not sure why but I expected it to be a bit less Cronenberg. It was very Cronenberg.

Just now learned there is new music out from Mimicking Birds. Hopefully an album to follow.

Honestly Tron: Ares was pretty decent for a Tron film. FR superior to Legacy.

Rewatched the original Tron this weekend. Probably the first time I have watched it as an adult. Never paid any attention to the story when I was a kid as the visuals then seemed so amazing but it was actually pretty prescient.

One Battle After Another (2025)
Director: Paul Thomas Anderson

Paul Thomas Anderson is the most complete director working today. See this on the big screen while you can.

Under Fire (1983)
Director: Roger Spottiswoode

I have always loved a journalism movie and this is an underrated one. Nick Nolte is really good as the central character caught up in war torn Nicaragua.

Bleeds (2025)
Wednesday

For no real reason I was a little worried about Bleeds by Wednesday. Their last album, Rat Saw God was such a personal favourite that I thought whatever came next would have to be a let down. I need not have worried. Indie folk rock of the highest order.

Colors (1988)
Director: Dennis Hopper

This is one of those films that I always wanted to watch in my teens but mum would never allow an R rated film in the house. Pretty typical of the late early 90s cop ghetto films. Feels very Hopperish too.

Rest in peace. You made me fall in love with film. 💔

Immortal Beloved (1994)
Director: Bernard Rose

I really enjoyed this. More than I thought it would. Hard to call it an answer to Amadeus when it can out ten years later but it is definitely in that vein. I am sure I have watched it before but absolutely no memory of it.

Alien Nation (1988)
Director: Graham Baker

First time I have watched this since it came out. I remember enjoying it as a lad and I have enjoyed it again now. I won’t pretend it is a great film but it is an interesting twist on the buddy cop genre and it contains some good ideas.

Is Graffiti Bridge the most perplexing Prince album? Some fantastic songs but some of his worst as well.

Witness (1985)
Director: Peter Weir

This still stacks up well. It’s as good as anything being made today.

Slap Shot (1977)
Director: George Roy Hill

I thought I had watched this before but as insane as it is I am sure I would remember it.
