I'm not sure that I buy the idea that Vancouver is being hit especially hard by injuries. There are plenty, to be sure, but not so many among important players.

Could Smith have been put with some real barn-burner types that season that bled some credit onto him, somehow? In fact he played almost the whole season with Nick Bonino (no slouch in those days but nothing special) and Rocco Grimaldi. huh.

So the most basic bit of raw material for that is what the predators did in Smith's 5v5 minutes, which is, unsurprisingly, pretty strong! (The non-Smith minutes give you an idea of contrast)

sG is my all-in-one player quality stat, with every isolated skill weighted according to a standard deployment profile. The most important components are these six, plotted to scale, with icetime and the teams he played for. Obviously that spike is being driven by 5v5 chance creation.

Feels strange to see people criticizing Rick Tocchet about giving some minutes to his fourth line (as referenced here, say: www.nbcsportsphiladelphia.com/nhl/philadel...) when he already uses his fourth line very sparingly.
