Can you share some of your thoughts on the linked article?

You can ignore the technical aspects and still realize this does not happen on Windows or Mac OS with such high frequency. Perhaps this is the nature of having 100 distros, but even the most popular and well-supported distros (Ubuntu) start to show cracks the more you use it.

It's worth noting that Linux installations rot at extremely volatile rates. Some users may be fine for years while others are not. I see large numbers of friends and strangers distro hopping frequently or ditching Linux in 1-6-month intervals. Everyone has a wildly different experience every time.

Though more stable in some ways, Flatpaks and App Images create numerous new issues, described in the linked article.

I haven't used win11 yet but I'm crossing my fingers breh I really don't wanna update, ever 🥲 It might genuinely be more annoying on modest hardware than Linux and I don't wanna find out.

I'm also biased because I am a dev. Using and compiling libraries and tools on Linux opens several more wounds

Packaging it works fine on Windows. I don't see why it's a bad idea. The benefit to statically packaging it is that you can release a software binary and forget about it for 5 years. It won't conflict with the global glibc version despite its age.
holdon.templeoftherat.com
In my opinion the author of a software should be able to put a link to a binary on their personal website, and that binary should be able to update itself. Even without updates, it should work for at least 5 years. None of these fix the ABI issues further into the article, except virtualization

Linux devs can pack *most* of the C runtime but not all. It's tricky to explain. The linked article explains it best but it's not for the layman.
holdon.templeoftherat.com
This issue occurs because of developer negligence. Windows and Linux app devs have the option to package these runtimes with the app so that you won't have to.

For Linux distros, their equivalent of the "Visual C runtime" cannot be packed into the app and causes far more sinister issues.

I don't expect most people to understand the linked article. Just beware that the Linux ecosystem is extremely flawed. It has remained flawed for 20+ years.

There will be no fixes soon until a very large development team decides to completely overturn all Linux distro and compiler conventions.

Fellow developer and Linux user here!

Things you should know about Linux:
- You will have to reinstall Linux every 3-6 months.
- A bad distro without bloat is still a bad distro.
- All distros are fundamentally bad: jangafx.com/insights/lin...
- Devs are not smart.
- Read this image's alt text
Upon launching Discord on Linux, the depicted screen will block you until you reinstall Discord. This screen may appear as often as every day. No, this download file will not work for 90% of you (If it did, then Discord would have made this automatic, like on Windows).

This is just the first of 1000 daily papercuts which can and will bleed you to death.

The 2nd best distro is Ubuntu.

The 1st best is Windows.

I keep saying this. The eraser uses your brush texture. If you use a soft brush then you get a soft eraser and it won't fully erase anything. It's like nasty erasers in real life that leave an ugly smudge on your paper.

Open source. Nobody has thought to change this in 2 decades. Not one soul.

Yeah creators gotta let go of all distinctions. Artists and gamedevs study within their own fields too much and everything feels like a rat race to be slightly better at, idk, sexy pinups.

But if you ignore the distinction between a CoD montage and student film, you create this

I'll take the L. BlueSky users are happy right now. It's only a social media site and Twitter already exists anyway. I shouldn't be coming in here demanding it be not-BlueSky. I make deep implications from everything I see, so I'm always asking questions and yapping. Maybe I'll change... no promises

I hate to stretch your point to the *extreme*, but that's not good. What if the USA makes a rule to bar legal migrants from coming? They're only a minority anyway.

In recent news, the USA is putting pressure to keep H1B migrants out of the country. Our majority loves it. Is that not a problem?
