So I'm new here. If you want an idea of what kind of stuff I work on, check out this blog post I wrote about building out the GenAI platform at Included Health over the last year+

Washington DC is the hottest city in the country because it's the only one where people spend all day walking around a paved-over swamp in a wool suit

Non-partisan AI supporter here

I see plenty of absurd science fiction claims about things that AI cannot do all the time

Sal Kahn's description of AI teaching assistants there feels doesn't feel unrealistic to me - I think you could build that with our 2025 era models

All in all a very sane ruling
- training on a book is obviously fine
- pirating books to train on is obviously not fine

It’s pretty wild that in a place like DC, heating is considered a “necessity” that landlords must provide, but AC isn’t. Right now it’s 95 degrees outside, and feels like 103 according to Google.
This heatwave is brutal and dangerous. If you're a renter, we put together a guide on everything you need to know about air conditioning. Stay safe, and know your rights! 51st.news/dc-tenant-gu...

a federal judge just ruled that AI/LLM training on copyrighted material is fair use

“Authors concede that training LLMs did not result in any exact copies nor even infringing knockoffs of their works being provided to the public”
Not everyone is going to like this part...

It is always such a bummer to hear otherwise smart people on smart podcasts breezily opine that “ADHD is overdiagnosed.” It is far, far, far (far) more common for ADHD to be missed or ignored, especially in girls & adults, than it is to be inappropriately diagnosed or treated.

(looking at a pencil) also a pretty unreliable calculator
(looking at a kitchen knife) why the fuck would you even make this, nobody needs a calculator that might chop your thumb off

I was just saying at #PyConUS that I thought traditional metrics were underrated. I think we jumped to “do everything with LLM as a judge” too soon
🤔 Can simple string-matching metrics like BLEU rival reward models for LLM alignment?

🔍 We show that given access to a reference, BLEU can match reward models in human preference agreement, and even train LLMs competitively with them using GRPO.

When I say “AI” I mean it the way it’s been used the past 60 or so years. If I mean to say “AGI” (which I’m not even sure I believe in) I will say “AGI”

I don’t know anyone working in tech who doesn’t have a story about having to go around official processes to get something done. Condition 1 from the OP holds in almost all cases.

If you haven’t, I guess congrats on only working at perfect workplaces in your career? But it’s not a bad thing to do.
The weak version of this — telling a story where you accomplished something by going outside official channels or processes — is often corrosive to leadership and is only a positive when 1) leadership is bad and needs to change; or 2) you are being invited into leadership with a change mandate

I think anti-AI people are pivoting to social shaming over using ChatGPT because they’re realizing they’ve already lost the battle of trying to convince people it’s totally useless.

There’s a simple solution to this: don’t let professors fail students based on the results of AI detection software, because the software does not work.

I’m hosting an LLMOps open space at 11am tomorrow in Room 316, here’s my pitch:

Do you have strong feelings about LangChain? Do you struggle to understand why Google provides two APIs to call the same Gemini models? Are you tired of hearing the word "agentic"?

See you there!

I will claim it: I use GenAI at work to write code, documents, and emails, and even to spice up my Slack announcements with fun little emojis
okay, if you think gAI is a positive, that its "here to stay", and you're so proud of using gAI to write create art, claim it. Disclose when you use it to read, write, think, create.
Have the integrity to publicly declare that you used gAI--its all the silence and secrecy that is so interesting.
