A digital illustration by GrimmbleWick. This piece was created for the 2025 "Fishy" zine, a collaborative project focused on a fictional detective noir setting featuring aquatic creatures. A seedy bar filled with various freshwater fish is framed in a tilted, fish-eye lens perspective with two figures seated at the bar at the forefront.

The smaller figure is a detective based on a Corydoras catfish. They're clad in a trench coat and fedora, a pipe held between their whiskered catfish lips. Their gaze is steely as they furtively slide an evidence folder labeled "Richard Bass" towards the larger figure seated beside them.

The larger figure, a certain "Al Carpone", appears to be a mobster based on a carp. Dressed in a suit and fedora, they puff on a cigar, a smug grin curled on their face as they loom over the detective.

The bar's other various patrons glower ominously in the background, their features mostly shadowed except for their eyes. The silhouette of an alligator gar bartender (a gartender, if you will) wipes down the bar top, several alcohol bottles and a glinting fork visible behind the counter.

At the very back, a lone figure is seen hastily making their way out the establishment's front door. They glance back nervously at the detective as they flee, their appearance suspiciously similar to that of the photo attached to the evidence folder.

Page 1 of a fish-themed illustrated murder mystery by TB (tangentburd). Image features a series of profiles, excerpts, notes and photos of the character Elisabetta Pavone, a mantis shrimp and the murder victim of this story. She was a boxer most famous for defeating a world champion fighter crab Nan Tulwa. She then retired and set up a pawnshop in Seaflore City. Her body was found near a hydrothermal vent, and reported dead by third-degree burns and stab wounds. A dinglehopper was found near the scene as a possible murder weapon. Two detectives, Murray the moray eel and Array the stingray, are tasked to solve this case.

She is an employee of Pavone's pawnshop, and has been scolded by Pavone often for taking too many bubble pipe breaks. On the day of the murder, she closed the shop after her late shift and claimed to have swum home right after, but did not remember any details as her new bubble pipe made her drowsy. Murray and Array discover that "blue" is a clue left by Pavone before she died, and is a common trait across all the suspects.

He is an employee of Pavone's pawnshop and known to get along well with the city's residents, but has been chastised by Pavone for overpaying for pawned items. He recognised the dinglehopper from the pawnshop's inventory. On the day of the murder, he left his work shift and went for a party at the Lanternfishes' house until late, which serves as his alibi.

He is Pavone's old friend from their fighter days, and revealed to have both admiration and envy of her past success. On the day of the murder, he visited Pavone's city and invited her to dinner, before she died later that night. His coral bouquet gift for her contains auger shells that match the stab wounds in Pavone's body. Murray and Array meet two anxious garden eels who seem to have something important to tell them.
