Watching the racist loons in the UK talking about how they aim to save the British Isles, it seems particularly timely to repeat a simple fact you may not be aware of.

Ireland is not a British isle.

My skepticism about "Agile" is well known. This report (see image) was linked from a recent IEEE article on failures in software projects. It suggests that I'm right about "Agile".
The IEEE article is here. It's quite serious, even a bit dull.

Every now and then I bump into stuff I did long ago. The Brent field is gone now, but it did a job at a time it was needed. Let's make it - or anything like it - not needed again. youtu.be/r0szeqVsk0Y?...

Are there new ways of evading the often enormous basic physical (i.e. physics) issues that would make an orbiting data center seriously tricky, and I've somehow missed them? Power, latency, cooling, maintenance (let's ignore installation), hard radiation, etc.

I made pasta carbonara the classic Italian way the other day. No cream. Just eggs and cheese. Bloody lovely. And a doddle to make. Why did I not learn this recipe before?

Seems a simple question. What's the answer where you work?

Pleased to be featured in Business Plus this week. Lots of people out there doing good work on EV charging and - in general - on solving the energy issues and climate change

What we've been doing in Go Eve aims - above all else - at making the EV transition easier. And it does.

Xiaomi has gotten to 500,000 cars in a fraction of the time taken by any other automaker, ever. Leapmotor got from 500,000 to 1,000,000 faster than any other automaker, ever. You might not even ever have heard of Leapmotor.

The EV revolution is not coming. It's here.

Whooping cough, ffs.
“An infant in Kentucky who was unvaccinated against pertussis, or whooping cough, has died, marking the third death from the deadly bacteria in the state this year. Before 2025, Kentucky had last recorded an infant whooping cough death in 2018.”

An odd take on the housing crisis. The political center-right and the center-left and the left and most of the right should all try to solve the housing crisis - for a LOAD of reasons. And, for a load of reasons, none of them have any intention of it. www.theguardian.com/world/2025/n...

It's easy to chase the same metrics as everyone else. Easy and often unhelpful.
One additional point to bear in mind. In an increasingly online world, those metrics are almost entirely designed by the people selling you the advertising.

Interesting. The Cloudflare outage earlier this week was caused by two minor mistakes. The second mistake allowed the first one to cascade onto essentially all of the production machines and break them.

Ireland doesn't do enough on defense. But at the same time we're stripping what little we have to give it to Ukraine. And that feels like the right thing to do.
Ireland has quietly delivered five air defense radar systems, likely Giraffe Mk IVs, alongside 34 vehicles and three bomb disposal robots to Ukraine. The radars, mounted on tracked platforms, can detect low-flying threats up to 50 km away. Ireland also pledged €66M via the EU for non-lethal support.

AIs - or LLMs - still can't reliably tell the time. Another nice article (with link to the underlying study) from the IEEE. AIs only seem to be smart. Doubt EVERYTHING they tell you - perhaps unless it's the text summarization task that they do seem pretty good at.

Take that JFK and Ronald Reagan.
Trump is ranting barely coherently to McDonald's franchise owners: "The one pilot said, 'skedaddle!' And that thing just turned on its side -- pppph. And it's so unbelievable. And that knocked out Iran nuclear capability."

Two in the last few days.
