Sunlights reflects of the water, making it appear very bright, compaed to the neighbouring land. Some shoals stand out very nicely in the sunglint. The image is a stitch of images ISS073-E-250736 and 250737. The water in the estuary is brownish from sediment in the water, the sea at left is blue with light blue patches of algae. This is the same view as the previous image, with Westward Ho! in northern Devon and the island of Lundy marked by arrows. I pointed to Westward Ho! because of my very nice memories of a stay there during a sedimentology field trip through Wales and Devon a long time ago. The coasts of Wales and Devon are great places to study sedimentology in ancient and modern environments. The owners of the hostel in Westward Ho! where I stayed with a group of students apologized for not having a ghost in their impressive building. It was looking out over the Celtic Sea where one morning we spotted some dolphins. The image consists of a stitch of images ISS073-E-250725 to 250733. Above centre is the harbour of Antwerpen (Antwerp) in Belgium. At upper left are some clouds, a part of the North Sea and some of the (pen)insulas of tthe Dutch province of Zeeland. Zoom in on the original for great detail. The separate images of this stitch can be accessed by changing the frame number in the link to the original. The image is a lightly annotated version of the previous image. Antwerp is indicated, and also a small inlet on the coast, right on the border of the Netherlands and Belgium. This inlet is called Het Zwin. In 1839 Belgium became formally independent from the Kingdom of the Netherlands, and the border is on the long axis of the inlet. In the past the inlet was much bigger and reached all the way to the town of Brugge (Bruges). In later centuries, despite engineering works, it gradually filled up, leaving a small nature area. This became known as a 'hunting ground' for the Belgian king which the Dutch agreed to take care of keeping an open connection to the North Sea. The agreement meant that the Dutch would have to dredge out the connection when needed. When I was a student I participated in field work here to measure the tidal sediment balance over one whole Moon cycle. We found out that there is still a net transport of sediment land inward gave an order of magnitude of the gtransport. So the Dutch had to keep dredging. In recent years more work has done to keep the inlet alive.

The image shows a dark starry sky and a bright comet-like object with a very sharply edged tail. The comet is planet Mercury. The tail consists of sodium atoms blown away from the planet's extreme thin atmosphere by the pressure of light particles (fotons) from the sun. This light pressure is the same force which drives solar sails in space. Steven Bellavia from Surry, Virginia, took this image. The tail is only visible during a few weeks around the time Mercury reaches its closest point of its orbit around the sun. The tail shines in light of sodium at a wavelength of 589 nanometres. You have to use a filter for just this wavelength to make the tail visible. It has been photographed by amateur astronomers from earth before. The tail was discovered only in 2001.

Dit was de Maan zojuist. Ik zie rechtsonder vrijwel op de horizon een paar schaduwen. Als hij nog niet perfect vol is, zou ik die schaduwen daar niet verwachten. Of is dit het gevolg van de scheve ligging van zijn baan? @hydrology.nl

The image shows an oblique view over brownish land at left and at top. In the centre of the image a large irregular shaped cloud field is visible, hanging mainly over the Atlantic Ocean at bottom. Shadows from clouds at upper right indicate a low sun angle. At lower right a small part of the space station is reflected in the window through wich the image was taken. In the course of the day the low clouds which reached over land dissolved.

The image shows an oblique view over a very haze part of Earth. At bottom a cloud swirl indicates a snmall low pressure area, with some sunglint off the Caspian Sea (at bottom), turning the sea surface bright. Azerbaijan (with Baku on the coast left of centre) and northwestern Iran are rather dark in the image, with a large area of fuzzy looking fog in the centre of the image and more bright looking fog and low cloud towards upper left. At top is the curved horizon of Earth and the blackness of space above it.

De #Zon vandaag. De groep van drie grote zonnevlekken links onder het midden vertoont weinig activiteit, dus vooralsnog ook weinig kans op een uitbarsting. De groep werd op 25 november door de Marsrobot Perseverance gefotografeerd toen hij voor ons nog niet te zien was. @leonoor.bsky.social
The image shows the sun with a number of dark spots, sunspots. Below and left of centre is an elonggated group is several very big sunspots. The image shows the Sun as photographed from the surface of planet Mars, showing several sun spots. Below centre is the big group which is also visible in the previous image. The image is strongly enhanced. A large number of bright specks which are visible in the black background around the sun are caused by noise in the camera. At the time of the photograph Mars was almost on the other side of the Sun, as seen from Earth. Therefore the Mars rover Perseverance could see the side of the Sun not visible to us. The sun rotates slowly anti-clockwise around its axis, that is from left to right in the image. The rotation drove the big sun spot group over the Sun's horizon at right and into our view early this week.

The image shows a dark sky over the curved horizon of earth at bottom with a band of airglow above the horizon and dawn just starting below it. There are a number of stars in the sky, with a conspicuous line of eight specks of light, plus a few other ones above it. These are all Starlink satellites. In the video you can see all of them move leftwards.

Sometimes an image taken from space station #ISS (on 11 November 2025) makes you wonder why it was taken. Then you zoom in and find out that astronaut Kimiya Yui photographed Iroquois Reef in the South China Sea, a disputed shoal. Original eol.jsc.nasa.gov/SearchPhotos... @daveatcogs.bsky.social
The image shows sea and small cumulus clouds over it. At right a round cell of these clouds has formed. In the centre of the image a tiny reef is visible, greenish by colour and hardly discernible from the sea.

A glory from space! A contrast enhanced image taken by earth observation satellite #Terra on 24 November 2025 shows one clearly. The border region of Namibia and Angola is at upper right. A glory is round, but not in this case. More on this in the alt-text.
The image shows an elongated shape coloured like a rainbow on clouds over the ocean west of Namibia and Angola, which are visible as a brown area at top right. A satellite like Terra scans the earth below as it flies over, each scan added to build up the image. A glory can be visible from airplanes when they fly over stratus clouds and have the sun directly behind the observer. A typical glory looks like a circle of coloured bands with the shadow of the airplane in the centre. Satellites are too far away of course to have their shadow be discernible. As the satellite moves, from top to bottom in this image, the position of the sun changes relative to the satellite and so does the visiblity and the size of the glory beneath the satelllite. This causes the glory to become oval in shape.

The image shows some rugged coast at lower right, with some clouds over the land. Most of the rest of the image shows intricate patterns of lines, swirls and blobs, and a ship and its wake behind it at top. Sunglint, sunlight reflecting off a body of water, can reveal shallow structures on the surface of the water, when viewed under the right angle. Every once in a while an astronaut takes a picture like this one, and it always reveals fascinating details. The surface of the sea is not flat, but constantly being shaped by wind and small and large currents and swirls which are called eddies (small ones) or gyres (big ones).

En voor de liefhebbers: met een verrekijker kun je ook de planeet Uranus die er vlakbij staat zien. Niet spectaculair, maar wel leuk voor je afstreeplijstje. De foto maakte ik op 21 november, en Uranus staat bij het pijltje.

The image shows a starry sky with a nebula below centre. At bottom red airglow over a curved Earth horizon is visible. The sky is full of stars, but some points of light could be electronic noise. Astronauts aboard ISS have been taking ever increasing numbers of night images (astronomical, aurora, thunderstorms, cities) and night timelapses.
