Great article on "Made in #Africa"

Tackling agr. & rural development needs developing agr. input (e.g. machinery) & output markets (e.g. food processing).

"While infant-industry... arguments have re-emerged in African policy debates..., a lot can be done in terms of industrial policies & investm."

Outcomes of the Global Peatlands Assessment for Africa presented today at #COP28, with Ifo Suspense, Jean-Jacques Bambuta, @simonlewis.bsky.social and Lera Miles. Several African countries include peatlands in their NDCs for many years - a very good example how to address them in climate policies!

Check out our new article on farm typologies and how they can be used to improve agricultural policy making. Was great to be part of this exciting team of authors, many thanks to Robert Huber for the fantastic lead! www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...

Happy to share our new conceptual paper on the importance of farm typologies for agricultural policy, superbly led by Robert Huber

Consumers face higher prices in the EU and outside.

In Least Developed Countries, prices rise especially for products that are already now consumed less than recommended, e.g., vegetables, fruit and animal protein.

EU agricultural production expands in response, but with consequences:

Nitrogen surpluses rise, particularly in regions where they are already critically high.

Some of EU meat production is replaced by imports, contributing to increased global GHG emissions. #ClimateChange

We find that oilseeds are most affected due to high import shares, especially of soy products.

Meat production is indirectly impacted and declines, relying on imported soy for feed.

Some products with high self-sufficiency levels remain rather unaffected.

Using a global partial equilibrium model (#CAPRI), we simulate the impact, examining adjustment mechanisms and regional differences within the EU. How resilient is the sector in the face of such disruptions?

Thanks Hamish Marr, Special Agricultural Trade Envoy of New Zealand; Adina Stoyke, Paul Smerda & Jan Heyen of Embassy of 🇳🇿 for discussing with our students @thaer-inst.bsky.social & staff members @iatd-hu.bsky.social on ag trade policy & the inclusion of agriculture in climate policy. Great evening!

Welcome @niklasdomke.bsky.social @iatd-hu.bsky.social @thaer-inst.bsky.social at Humboldt-Unviersität zu Berlin.

Niklas wrote an excellent MSc-thesis at IATD on the opportunity cost of rewetting farmed peatland in 🇩🇪.

He will work on our new project on peatland GHG emission data & the EU context.

Just arrived here... and:

We are glad to having received funding for a two year project together with @greifswaldmoor.bsky.social on:
