The "T" Sounds (tea, té, tee)

It comes from the Min Chinese word tê. It traveled by sea, mostly through Dutch traders from Fujian province. The Dutch brought the word to countries like England, France, Germany, and Spain. That's why we say "tea" in English, "thé" in French, and "té" in Spanish.

🍵 The "Cha" Sounds (чай, chai, chaa)

This pronunciation comes from the Cantonese word chàh. It traveled overland via the Silk Road to Central Asia, Persia, Eastern Europe and on to countries like India and Turkey, Czechia and Ukraine. The cultures along this route picked up this pronunciation.
