Hey there! I'm one of the blind folks who read alt text on here. I'd like to say thank you for adding that so that I can also enjoy images of cartoon animals. A little effort from you means a world of difference for people like me

I managed to catch myself a cold. Same thing happened when I spent time in Glasgow a couple of years ago, but not when I was in Edinburgh the time before that.

Common factors are 1 Scotland and 2 seeing my cousin's small children. So far I haven't gotten sick when I experience one or the other […]

Ended my trip to Edinburgh last night with a late ghost tour, under a full moon.

There are a LOT of creepy stories about the Edinburgh Underground; they're contradictory and clearly played up for the tourists, but it's still a good time and worth checking out if you're even here. The Real Mary […]

Went to the Edinburgh Dungeon, and after that I popped into the National Gallery of Scotland to also get some high culture.

U came out to find a two-man band rocking out while a woman in neon yellow danced to their music. The woman isn't part of the band, she just wanted to dance.

God I love […]

Edinburgh is really fond of Sir Walter Scott. Is he the most Scottish Scot in all of Edinburgh?

#edinburgh
OK, wow.

This is the Walter Scott monument in East Prince's Street Gardens, Edinburgh, silhouetted against a bright blue sky. And it's enormous.

It looks like a Gothic cathedral, and when I say Gothic, I'm talking about the Germanic people who built impressive cathedrals, not chicas who like skulls and ravens. There are four arches formed by four pillars, each topped with a spire and crusted with all sorts of embellishments.

Those four pillars support a massive central pillar, held up by flying buttresses. The central pillar rises stepwise; the corners of each layer have their own small spires, and the very top layer culminates in a truly massive spire. Throughout the structure are all sorts of decorative arches carved into the stonework.

On a plinth in the center sits a statue of Walter Scott. The statue is literally larger than life, yet is still dwarfed by the monument around it. The statue of Walter Scott at the heart of the monument. It us made of white marble and shows Sir Walter sitting on a chair, wearing a flowing robe. His pose evokes a Roman philosopher or senator.

I approve of the choice of flags to fly outside the Scottish Parliament.

Four flags flying outside the Scottish Parliament.

From left to right: the flags of the European Union, Scotland, United Kingdom, and Ukraine.

Did you know the Scottish parliament has an entrance just for cyclists?

[Northern Ireland, The Troubles]

Hoo boy. The UVF carried out false flag attacks against Protestant civilians in the 1960s and 1970s, on the orders of Iran Paisley, to turn Protestants to the right and against any sort if détante or agreement with Catholics. The British Army knew what was going […]

[Bluesky news, racism]

Please don't pretend that fedi is some bastion of progressiveness in opposition to bluesky. Yes the CEO is very bad and they're basically centralized, but fedi is super racist too. Don't let bluesky's fuck ups make you forget ours. If we want a social media that's […]

Punk was hit by a car on a pedestrian crossing (had right of way).

Punk wore plenty of metal, and slid/rolled all the way over the car, car showed some pricy damage. Driver got out and shouted, as assholes do.

Punk shrugged it off, looked at the damage on the car, to the crossing, to the […]

I am in Edinburgh!

It's at least as nice as the last time I was here. Scottish cities have more character than those of Ireland.

Lots of visible support for Palestine, which pleases me.

Today I wrote a new set of algorithms for the Pax calendar. This was all done in Python, so no speedups from using compiled code.

Exact same test, exact same comparison. My old code took 7 min 40 sec to check 10000 Julian years; my new code did it in 34 seconds.
infrapink.mastodon.ie.ap.brid.gy
Granted, the new converter does the new year and year lengths computations in Fortran, which is faster than Python. Still, I think it's at least partly because the new algorithms are much more concise and efficient.

I've been refactoring my entire hobby project. Applying ideas I figured out since I started work, I have been able to shrink my early algorithms significantly; my International Fixed Calendar converter shrank from 195 lnes to 79, including blank lines and comments.

I have a wee tester that […]

[Star Trek TOS S1 E 10 or 8]

This episode has quite a lot of men talking over the woman who is ostensibly the expert. Dr. Noelle thinks everything is fine until Kirk points out that it isn't actually. This would have been a much stronger episode if Dr. Noelle observed that the treatment effects […]

[Star Trek TOS S1 E 10 or 8]

"Dagger of the Mind" is the 10th episode of the original Star Trek made, but the 8th to be released. Dr. Helen Noelle is a psychologist who, like many women, really wants to shag Cpt. Kirk. Also the first appearance of the Vulcan mind meld, and there's a […]

Hey @Gargron it looks like Mastodon doesn't display Lemmy or mbin posts properly. Commenters indicate they do display properly when viewed with Misskey.

[Star Trek TOS S1 E11 or 7; mention of sexual assault]

Yeoman Rand gets to be prominent this episode. She angrily laments that Kirk was always too professional to act on their mutual attraction, which is super icky given that Evil Kirk tried to rape her a few episodes ago. I know Star Trek TOS […]

Spock's comment about the hospital equipment being antique hits differently in 2025. When the episode aired, it was modern, so the reference was to how what seems cutting-edge will one day be obsolete. Of course, today it already seems old-fashioned, so we identify […]
