Layers of chicken wire over the other, you may have to heavy-duty staple them to the overhang to get them to hold, or apoxy glue.

Sounds like a "damned if you do, damned if you don't" moment. This is the universe pushing you for (perhaps!) the change you know you need, but at the same time it's gonna be a challenge because of the familiar vs. the unknown.
