The Tractatus is virtually Dada. It's an unintentional parody of logical demonstration.🤷

We had to take it in High school but I liked it. Good for understanding English (and other languages) and for experiencing original texts, but actually not helpful for style and composition in English.

Think, by Simon Blackburn (OUP,1999) is a nice intro to major themes.
Doing Philosophy; a practical guide for students (Bloomsbury, 2013) is a sympathetic intro to practising philosophy
Philosophy (ed.) David Papineau (Duncan Baird Publishers, 2009) is a visually engaging text, and finely written.

You're shifting ground. Didn't say kill or sacrifice. Said exactly what I said. You think it is even in principle possible that the purpose of the universe - if it has one - is torturing babies with pliers and a blowtorch for fun? And is therefore good/right?
December 14, 2024 at 1:56 AM
🤔 hmm. How about...torturing babies for fun with pliers and a blowtorch is wrong.

It's become a Resource-Curse. The govt can't stop subsidising it or the economy will fail and therefore the government cannot reform the economy because...etc.
The result is political paralysis, as is plain to see.

So close St Augustine felt the need to reject it forcibly in 'The City Of God'. #philsky

2. A state appropriate to 1.

Belief is a permanent structure of human consciousness, attendant on the search for truer beliefs (Thomas Reid, 1764); ambiguity is permanent condition (De Beauvoir, Ethics of Ambiguity, 1947).
Beauvoir is razor-sharp. It's just a pity about those girls she pimped for J-P.

Well, it's a brilliantly written book, as well as fascinating, so there's that 🤷‍♂️

👍 Starmer has conceded failure already, imo. The growth target was the measure of success and it's already plainly impossible, hence the slew of new aims. UK political paralysis is founded on the inability to face endogenous inequality, i.e. the consequences of the neoliberal economic model 🤷🏻

👍 (I was also thinking of Kant, when he said Metaphysics was the queen of the sciences)

History is the queen of the sciences.

Yes. God's infinite power includes the power to add attributes to itself inconceivable to human imagination, to eliminate the concept of power from memory and imagination in the years 1721-1723, to turn the earth into a blackwhite rabbit, to kill God, to resurrect bread-and-butter, to unsee me, etc.

💯
Psychopathic traits are an evolutionary maladaption for fitness in consequence of neuroplasticity. They're notably present in politicians.
