Japanese to English translator and retro game enthusiast.
May have an unhealthy addiction to retro game shopping.
It's apparently an issue with the PS4 version too.

I was forewarned by a JP post talking about that version, so I made a point of saving frequently (well, as frequently as I can when you can't save inside levels).

It's annoying when it happens in a boss fight, but hasn't made me give up yet.

It's got a pretty standard isekai plot. MC falls into a sinkhole with his fiance who's not that into him and they get sent to a weird SF world with a bunch of other folks.

Also, he's possessed by an evil glove that's voiced by Takehito Koyasu and shouts chuuni lines at the start of every battle.

This being on Vita means I can take screenshots that aren't just me pointing my cellphone camera at the screen. Fancy.

I appreciated the Skies of Arcadia cast having cameos as recruitable soldiers in this one. (Vyse even managed to make it into the anime adaptation!)

Never did finish it, but I should definitely go back someday.

Yeah, I definitely need to spend more time with it. I'm only on my second loop. Good mix of different stories so far.

There's also a remake, アパシー学校であった怖い話 Visual Novel Version, I've just realized is up on Steam.

I kind of dig the low budget "just stick some developers in school uniforms whether they look the right age or not" aesthetic this original has, but it's a more accessible option, albeit untranslated.

There's apparently something like fifty or so stories in total, and a follow-up game called Tsukikomori with a similar concept.

The PS1 version apparently lets you choose your gender, which changes how some of the stories go, but the SFC version is all I've got, so it's what I'm playing.

You pick one of the six interviewees (the seventh storyteller not having shown up) and depending on the order you ask them in, they'll tell a different story.

Once everyone's finished, you may or may not trigger a seventh story. (We got thrown out by the teacher on night watch on my first loop.)

Every game over, a girl yelled at me to しっかりしろよ!!

It's only a couple hours long, assuming that you don't get a game over, so when I finish my current Famicom RPG I'll try again and see if i can get an おめでとう!! instead.

I've been meaning to give this another go now that I actually know how to equip stuff, but work has been keeping me busy this month, and I've gotten around to less spooky games than I planned to going into it.

I wanted to take mine on the train with me, but then I realized it has no built in headphone jack, and there's no way I'm playing Makai Toushi SaGa without the music.

No luck finding the headphone adapter out in the wild yet.

Yeah, no relation here other than the thematic one.

I figured why not follow up one Greek/Roman mythology inspired Famicom RPG with another.

I've had Heracles 2-4 sitting around for a while, and finally managed to pick this one up while I was in Tokyo, so it was already on my mind.

Playing with a guide did mean that I ended up with all of the Zeus equipment, which kind of trivialized the final boss. Poor Hades couldn't do more than one damage a turn as I crushed him in only a few hits. Oops.

(Me not having them wouldn't have saved him. The next best stuff was hard to miss.)

The monster designs are noticeably weird and alien. Some of these guys here show up not more than a few steps outside of the starter town.
October 20, 2025 at 2:23 PM
The game has a heavy emphasis on exploring the world and finding the items you need to progress by talking to NPCs in town. Its hints can be obtuse sometimes, but there were only one or two places where it felt particularly egregious.

(Definitely appreciated having a guide sometimes, though.)

As proof of that, here is Ichigo doing the Sunrise Stance before cutting down a Christmas tree.

There were a few points where I consulted a walkthrough, but the progression is smooth and feels pretty good outside of the olive grind.

I eventually managed to make it to Hades and then hack his ankles off the first time. (Easy fight if you just duck and keep stabbing.)

It has solid gameplay, and a really nice soundtrack, with the one disappointment being that it occasionally decides to make you grind olives to buy an item, and since you lose half your olives every time you die, I was always starting from zero, and had to throw fireballs at snakes for an hour.

I definitely held off on collecting much until I moved into the countryside and suddenly found I had a bunch of space for bookshelves.

(I now have a whole lot less space, because a collection expands to fit the size of its container.)

Discovered this one back when I was looking for copies of the related Mujintou Monogatari/Hyouryuuki.

Was having a good time exploring up until I ran into a bear at night and was promptly mauled to death, then realized I hadn't saved at all. Oops.

I'll get back to giving it another try someday.
