Absolute delight to be back at @tricondublin.bsky.social on Friday to talk about language rights and the Irish constitution.

Thanks to the organisers, commentators, and all present for a thoroughly interesting discussion.

Looking forward to being back in Dublin for this exciting event next week.

This time I'll be discussing Article 8 of the Irish Constitution, and whether it helps or hinders the development of Irish language rights.

It was an absolute delight to be back in Belfast for my PhD graduation yesterday.

Wonderful day to celebrate, as well as catching up with @mckeevergrainne.bsky.social, @rjjoconnell.bsky.social and the PhD cohort.

Happy Canada Day to one of my favourite places on Earth.

Connemara isn't in the UK either, for all the limited effort put into this.

Wales being told to be grateful for receiving scraps. Tale as old as time.

Driver was resolved through reference to an explanatory memorandum.

Of course we don't have those in 40k, and there isn't a middle ground between a 5+ or 6+ on a six-sided dice either.

All this reminds me of the case of Driver in Wales, in which there was an alleged inconsistency between the Welsh-language and English-language version of a legislative provision. Which is an issue in Wales because both versions have equal standing.

The answer? We don't actually know.

Tournaments typically make a decision which one they are following. Both app and website are considered official sources.

The app has been incorrect before, but the website has also made changes without highlighting what those changes are.

Now generally, people follow the website for the "true" updates, noting the app has been incorrect a few times before.

OTOH, people pay for access to the app, so should expect it to be correct and updated accordingly. It isn't always announced when updates are released on the website.

Similarly, you have to pay to access rules in the app - with a code you receive from the physical copies of a rulebook - but the online changes are free to download.

The confusion comes where people don't know which set to follow: both are "official" sources, its the same company.

The conflict between the photos is not a case where the app isn't updated yet; as the change in the website occurred two weeks ago.

Now, Warhammer 40k is famously ludicrous for rules updates. A recent rulebook I bought was outdated by the time I got home - updated on app and website.

Final Fantasy X & Shenmue II for sure.

Potentially Lies of P also.

I'm going to see it tomorrow, happy to hear all the hype!

Ah now you are too kind.

FWIW, I was into 40k in my youth then left the hobby. Once I had disposable income as an adult, the personalised ads started popping up...

Slay the Spire is so underrated.. even if every other modern roguelike cites it as an inspiration.

Ironclad will always be the best character.

FWIW, I also lived in Aberystwyth for years. Also a lovely place, apart from getting there.

Caernarfon is my hometown, so I do have a love for it, and its a wonderful place to visit.

But I'm still surprised to see it as a "happiest place to live in Britain" list.

Another fun case in the series of "what is a public function" judicial reviews.

Interesting bit in para 50 on principle of non-court interference in political party autonomy.

Court of Appeal dismisses claim for judicial review brought by Tortoise Media Limited against the Conservatives.

The election of party leader is not the exercise of a public function for the purposes of section 6 of the Human Rights Act 1998. It is a "private" act.

Chríochnaigh mé mo chur i láthair don Oíche Ólaíochta (21 Bealtaine). Táim ar bís!
Finished my talk for Pint of Science (21 May), excited to present.
A slide for a talk called "Cearta teanga in Éirinn agus sa Bhreatain Bheag", or Language Rights in Ireland and Wales.
