1. I recently adapted Elizabeth Stokoe's Conversation-Analytic Role-play Method (CARM) for a demonstration of training in intercultural L2 conversation in a module for graduate students. Great overall response & sense of breakthrough. #CARM #L2IC 🧵

Norway's gift to the UK this year comes with strings attached - they are pressuring the UK to sign off on the mega-polluting Rosebank oil field.

This is wake-up call for Labour MPs. 👋

Vote for our EU customs union bill on Tuesday so we can start to undo the damage done by Brexit.

Invaluable educational journey through the excellent 20th Refugee Film Festival (by "Japan for UNHCR"), online + screen shows. Spreading it around my local community, connecting it to "intercultural communication" in my university seminars, etc. www.japanforunhcr.org/how-to-help/...

This really shouldn't feel so unusual and like such a breath of fresh air. Almost a relief.

If British politicians had had the basic integrity to send and repeatedly affirm this kind of message over the past 20 years then we wouldn't be dealing with the far right now.

it's pretty wild to be doing "stop being racist to my computer friend" discourse when the forces of Actual Racism are totally ascendant in government and inventing new ways to arrest people for their skin color every day

In all seriousness, the "LLMs are people and you're racist if you don't like them" shit is the natural endpoint of a consumerist society in which consuming and fandom are the only modes of identity-building many people understand. Finally, a product no one can tell you not to love.

Listening to Rest is Politics, Rest is Politics US, and reading respected commentators, it's striking how 'left-wing bias' in universities is now taken for granted. That matters, especially in the US, where academia faces political attack. Thoughts from having worked in US/UK universities. 🧵

I've finally de-activated my Facebook account, after considering it for several years. ATM, I feel like I'll permanently delete it, but I decided to take this step for now. Main reason: increasing resentment of being a cog in Zuckerberg's weird massive machine.

Please don't take it personally - it's just to do with whether I think we have shared interests or not.
My interests are clear enough on my profile and my posts.

For example, I'm definitely NOT interested in finding dating partners - human or bot!

Great resource here. TBH, not really sure yet whether I’m completely “anti-AI” (I make cautious use of AI translation, etc), but I’m alarmed by the uncritical cult-driven rush towards AI dependence, and I think this critical questioning is a welcome eye-opener and braking & thinking mechanism.
