Every “free” file converter online = your files sent to some random server.

So I made my own. Runs locally as an app on Mac, Windows and Linux.

Now 1,100 users use it for 3,742 types of conversions.

I made an app that converts almost any file to any other file locally. To celebrate reaching 1500 users, the apps now 50% off!

I made howtoconvert.co, a universal file converter that runs entirely on your device.

Unlike other sites that upload your files to their servers, nothing leaves your computer.

It’s a simple drag-and-drop app so anyone—not just programmers (using command-line tools)—can convert privately.
How to Convert
Convert almost any file locally - nothing gets uploaded to the cloud. Do 3000+ document, video, image, audio & email conversions with one app for Mac, Windows & Linux.

8 months ago I launched an app to convert almost any file locally.

I was sick of sending my files to sketchy sites on Google.

And sick of looking up how to use command line tools every time I needed to convert a file.

Just added email file support to the app that can convert almost any file to any other file locally!

How to Convert now supports:
- 3,902 file conversions,
- emails,
- can handle multi-GB files,
- has improved markdown and epub support
- and way improved settings!

That would be nice, but difficult. Many formats are proprietary and the work that’s been done to make npm tools for them are pretty scattered and made with different interests.

The only way to make it work with licensing etc I could think of is running the tools as seperate executables from an app

just added multi-GB file support to howtoconvert
testing it with a 2.7GB video file right now

my M2 MacBook Pro fan just went brrrrrr for the first time ever 🔊
(Turn sound on)

feels good when the code makes the machine sweat

How many domains do you own?

Be honest.

Bing has messed me over so much, that anything now just makes me laugh 😂

Instead of using my:
app logo,
opengraph image
or just any other picture on the site,

…it uses my tiny profile pic that’s hidden in a modal

I look like a sims character

It’s my birthday today 🎁 (I’m 30 🥲)

And I just woke up to PicTiler.com (my photo mosaic generating site) getting a sale from Bing! ⬇️

Just the CEO… shouldn’t they have bought the company?

After checking off every single one, and emailing them a month later, they told me I was still violating a guideline.

But, then 7 days later, without changing ANYTHING

My site randomly started appearing in their search 🤷‍♂️

If you're not been appearing on Bing, don't bother contacting support.

They'll respond with this. Basically saying:

you've violated one of our many guidelines (a 3,202 word document) and we won't tell you which one.
