Limited Collectors' Edition C-49 (DC - June 76)

Writer: Jim Shooter
Artists: Curt Swan/Jack Abel

At my very first Terrificon Mike Grell was a guest, and while I don't usually go out of my way to get signatures, I happened upon a box that had this treasury for $10, which I figured was a sign.

Oh. This explains this page from Legion of Super-Heroes so much. Where Giffen, or Levitz or both, pokes fun at Block Wars.

I believe this might be taken from the UK Sonic the Comic series, that had its own Sonic continuity for a lot of years. But I don't see a Fleetway copyright anywhere, so I'm actually unsure.
Also, this issue of EGM had one of the grodiest covers of all time. They had nothing to work with. I love it

One of my first Sonic the Hedgehog memories is reading this Sonic Origin comic printed in a Sega suplement with-in Electronic Gaming Monthly in October 1991.

It stood out to me, because this origin of Sonic originally being brown, and Robotnik just being some normal scientist, felt really random.

That time Gamepro gave Pitfighter on the Sega Genesis a perfect score. (from the Dec 1991 issue of Gamepro)

A game equal to Final Fight to on the SNES

Femforce 13 (AC Comics - May 88)

Writer: Wes Covington
Artists: Don Secrease/John Dell/Bill Koch

Ah, good ol 'Good Girl' super-hero comic Femforce. I pick them up whenever I see them, this is the earliest issues I have. It's kind of crazy that this comic has lasted over 200 issues!

NEW COMIC DAY!

2000 AD PROG 2460
SUPERMAN 32

(Its been a while since I've had a NCBD this small, even on a 5th week, which technically this isn't even one of those. And normally I wouldn't likely be reading Superman without all the Legion stuff going on)

And that's PC Games December 1997. It was fun walk down memory lane revisiting it, I remembered more about this specific issue then I thought I would. But I did read it a lot when I was 15. I might do more of these magazine dives in the coming months. 26/26

Interestingly, I don't think DVD-rom based games ever took off in the way CD did. By the time DVD drives were affordable and available, CDs were still cheap and easy to manufacture, and while consoles would adopt DVD, PC games would start to become all digital come 2005-2010. 25/??

I think the Age of Empires sequels are generally more well regarded, but here's Age of Empires 1 at the tail end of 1997. I know I played a lot of AoE 3 in the 00s. 24/??

Dark Reign and Total Annihilation were two real time strategy games that came out nearly at the same time. To the point they had their reviews right next to each other. Dark Reign always seemed kind of interesting, but Total Annihilation ended up something of a cult classic of the era. 23/??

DOGDAY holds a special place in my heart because frustratingly I could never get its demo to work. It was another first person point and click Myst-style game, so it was probably rubbish. But because I couldn't play it, it stuck with me. Maybe I'll find a copy some day... 22/??

The shine had come off Myst by 1997, so reviews for Riven were a little harsh, even though it's kind of a masterpiece. But by 1997 these kinds of 3D rendered slideshows were already seen as old hat. 21/??

I was fascinated by this high scoring review of what looked to be a very dry historical game published by the Discovery Channel. Even though I never played it then, the memory of this review got me looking for a way to play it just this year. It's pretty good! 20/??

PC Games, not kind to Legacy of Kain. A game that would spawn some very memorable sequels. 18/??

A Postal, a game that looks positively quaint in 2025. I would not have given this a B, it was jank as hell. 17/??

Cover subject Star Wars Dark Forces 2: Jedi Knight gets a double review for both its light and dark side play throughs.
I'd get Jedi Knight the following June, after my family got a new Pentium PC (no 3D card though) and I played the hell out of it. I agree with these ratings. 16/??

Tomb Raider 2 is an immanent release, so gets two pages of preview coverage, everyone was pretty excited to see the much expanded sequel land. I didn't have a Playstation, so I was pretty indifferent. 15/??
