That want to separate oneself from the "monsters" seems to be critical. I can even empathize with that impulse as I feel it myself often enough.
I think it's a part of the bigotry and eugenics that are resurgent at the moment. The "enemy" is intrinsically evil, so bigotry feels justified to them.

We KNOW our legal system puts away innocent people. We KNOW that innocent people have been executed by the state.

I'd argue that legal is the only one of those three that they deserve.
If you've got a reason that means it's necessary to be civil and polite, by all means.
For everyone else, mockery and ridicule are more effective at rhetorically fighting back than showing them respect they don't deserve.
