What a tragic decision to cut core disciplines. I can't speak about others in detail but #Geology at the University of #Leicester gave New Zealand Jim Cole. A brilliant contributor to our understanding of our volcanoes and an even better person. No chance of this happening again.

The Ashburton Lakes (Hakatere) region is a high altitude basin between the Rangitata and Rakaia Rivers, Canterbury, New Zealand. It was heavily glaciated as the kame terraces (deposits of a river running along the flank of a #glacier) show. #geomorphology #photo #geology #geography #Aotearoa
Apparent river terraces (straight lines) high on the hill side show where the glacier flowed.

Gravel cliffs at Rakaia Gorge, Canterbury. This cliff displays two #glacial #outwash gravels. The lower, orange gravel is from MIS 6 (c. 150,000 years ago), while the upper grey gravel is from the last glaciation c. 26,000 yrs ago. #geomorphology #photo #geography #geology #NewZealand #Aotearoa

The modern shore platform at Kaikoura. On this tectonically active coastline there are are series of raised marine terraces. The coast is periodically uplifted - the last time by the M w 7.8 earthquake in 2016.

Rapid incision of rivers through bedrock creates strath (rock) terraces. This example is from the Kawerau Gorge in Otago, New Zealand.

The smoother area at the base of the boulder indicates the depth of soil erosion at this location.

Tafoni (cavernous weathering) in rhyolite on Ahu Ahu (Great Mercury Island), New Zealand. The formation of tafoni is cryptic, but this boulder is about 150m from the sea and it may be due to salt weathering.

Not to mention the importance of these students for the local economies in the towns and cities the universities are located.

International students make up about 5% of the university student population in the US.

The entire university sector is worth about $600B

Kicking out all the foreign students will cost the US $30B a year in foregone revenue.

This footage of a rock and ice #landslide from the Birch Glacier in Switzerland is spectacular. There seems to be a lake forming behind the landslide fill in the valley floor, so the sequence of events may not be over. #Geomorphology is exciting. #geology #geography ⚒️ #geoscience
