I needed to not just read about characters like Idgie, seeing them in movies made me feel seen and gave me examples to point others to when describing myself before I had the right LGBTQ vocabulary and knowledge.

It’s interesting to think back how often I would reference Idgie as my ideal for my independence without consciously thinking about her sexuality or gender identity. She just resonated with me as a character in a way that other female characters wearing pants did not.
