As a chair, I have cut those off with, 'Perhaps that would be more appropriate over coffee, then? Any *questions* for our speaker?'. (And if it's a prof 'responding' to a student - they need to be the one buying the coffee, though I've not (yet) said that...).

All of the hats that were left - along with a whole lot more, and scarves, etc. - left my office today in the arms and bag of the students' union welfare officer :)
