Thinking of this skeet as my train sits in the Baden-Baden station.

I've shared my Google sheets template with many Minnesotan friends. I've never referred to anything as much as to my "winter bike gear" sheet.

People describing elections always talked of armed soldiers by ballot boxes, and ballots color-coded to indicate how you voted.

People described Zaïre as "more a place outside of neighboring countries than somewhere that shared a border."

Cleansing Mobutu's memory is tragic.

The relative stability under Mobutu came from his talent for divide-and-conquer. He'd cowed, co-opted, manipulated, or disappeared all opposition. The secret police were everywhere, or everyone thought they were and was scared. 🧵

Some Lebanese guys ran a "bank" even missionaries used because banks are useful. I don't want to imagine what they did with the capital.

When our school went on a field trip to the local museum, the staff toured with us, leapfrogging the 2 functioning light bulbs alongside our group. 🧵

We stored aviation gas barrels of water to prepare for the inevitable water outages, and candles/matches on every shelf for the inevitable electric outages. My address was in Zambia because there was no mail, and no international phone service. 🧵

People explained that kids would "pay" to take a test with (f ex) a cup of rice, and then "pay" again to get it graded. (On top of tuition most couldn't afford.) That's because public employees tended to be paid months late, if they were paid at all, at the now-worthless pre-inflation salary. 🧵

I have spent many walks peering under the street when construction or maintenance gives me the chance.

How do we get a mandatory rental registry passed and implemented? Can we work together on this?
November 22, 2025 at 2:08 PM
Lovely - where are these taken?
November 21, 2025 at 8:41 PM
Fundamentally, we're in agreement: all the existing data sources on rents in Minneapolis and Minnesota have one or more problems, and we need a rental registry so we have better data.

Maybe erased isn't the right word, rather, it isn't reflected in the data. I'm fairly sure none of my renters ever contacted HOME Line, that doesn't mean my building doesn't exist, but it's not in the data.
