Trump wil een Republikeinse conventie organiseren vlak voor de midterms volgend jaar. Dat gebeurt normaal gesproken alleen bij presidentiële verkiezingen. Het is een manier om de aandacht vast te houden en de boodschap te bepalen.

Trump zei gisteren de straat op te gaan met de politie en de nationale garde. Dat gebeurde niet. Hij ging op bezoek bij een soort politiepost en sprak daar achter de hekken de troepen toe. Terugweg kwam ik Trumps motorcade tegen. Zo ziet de president de stad.

Dit gebeurde gisteren in mijn woonwijk.
De mall in Washington op een zonnige zaterdagmiddag. Mix van vrolijke toeristen en verveelde militairen van de Nationale Garde. Ze staan op plekken waar ze goed op de foto komen, maar waar amper criminaliteit is.
