“Blacksmith’s balls!” Alarm strikes his tailbone so sharply that his fingers go cold, his body turning before his hindbrain has decided on a course of action, before it’s even identified the possible exits, and for an impossible, delirious second, he wonders when he’s going to learn the lesson that the world does exist, even when he’s not thinking about it.

There’s a shadow in the arch of the church until there isn’t, the shape of it stepping into a stream of sunlight that flows like water and wears like silk, draping itself over the head-shoulders-waist of a man that someone has certainly waited lifetimes for.

He can’t be any older than Jayce is but he looks like he hasn’t slept much since infancy. His face is flushed like he’d walked at least some distance to get here, his hair piled loose in a bun, strands of it wild. He’s built almost entirely in angles—his cheeks, the small square of his chin, his shoulders, his elbows, his hips. His collarbones jut from under the crease of his buttoned shirt, its short-sleeved cut colored in a subtle purple-blue, a shade shared between dawn and dusk, the contrasting wash of his jeans spinning the flax in his dark hair into gold.

The toddler waddles about the tall grasses, babbling summery sweet.

Already so smart, she knows her colors, knows her “táta” and “papá,” and when she really wants to, she outruns both, giggling, the brace on her right leg winking in the sunlight.

She is precious, Viktor thinks, with his moles and amber eyes, with the dark hair and tawny skin of…

Jayce adjusts another gear on the contraption between them, brow furrowed in concentration.

Viktor’s gaze caresses along his body, the healthy pudge regained there. Stops, heart aglow, at the swell of Jayce’s stomach, where their daughter’s sibling sleeps.

II.

“Viktor?”

Jayce watches him, scarred eyebrow raised, teasing. He gestures at his rounded stomach, at the idle wrench in Viktor’s hand. “Making me do all the work, huh?”

Such ease in those eyes, those beloved crow’s feet…and Viktor sways, all dizzied joy at this unforeseen gift: Growing into old age—old age!—surrounded by his partner, their children, in a sunny glade next to their cottage by a stream.

He careens close, cups Jayce’s face, and kisses him deeply.

When they part, Jayce’s gaze is damp above a tremulous grin.

Jayce will understand, Viktor had thought. And he was right.

III.

“…Time to crank it?” Viktor finally quips.

Jayce kisses his palm.

“Time to crank it.”

Together, they grasp the final lever, and push down.

Their invention unfurls…

…And out bursts a stream of multicolored mechanical butterflies.

They flit and float and dance along the glade, swoop around and around, before finally soaring into a tumbling parade across the sky.

Below the display, their daughter shrieks, the picture of delight.

Wordlessly, the two scientists cling to each other within a sidelong embrace…

…Until at last, the sun dips low, and it is time for the four of them to go home.

Jayce has come back…different.

Insisting to Viktor their life’s work is no miracle, but a “curse—”

No. This isn’t the Jayce he knows.

“We have to end it, Viktor,” Jayce rasps. “We have t—”

Without warning, he doubles over in a long, long, long, terrible coughing fit.

Within Salo, Viktor pauses.

This is the sound…

…of his Undercity peers who inhaled too much of the Grey…

…of *Viktor*, before every inevitable nosebleed, months ago.

For the first time since Jayce’s return, Viktor *looks* at him.

For the first time since the start of his evolution, Viktor feels *afraid*.

II.

Beneath the grime, Jayce’s skin is no longer warm and golden, but ashen. Blistered.

His nose is *gone*. Replaced by tubes and a tarnished metal prosthetic.

Jayce is on *oxygen*.

Why is Jayce on *oxygen?*

“Jayce?”

Jayce cannot be *sick.*

“What…*happened to you…?”*

Jayce cannot be *dying.*

Without Jayce…Viktor will—

“Come see me,” he urges again. “I will fix this.”

Jayce cuts Salo down, still wheezing, and Viktor discusses singularities, chaos with Sky.

But Viktor’s mind replays the sound…

…of the rattling of his partner’s lungs…

…of *Jayce,* crying quietly, close to Viktor’s hospital bed.

Coldly, he realizes he understands.

Jayce is resting on the couch, eyes closed, when Viktor comes home from work and quietly leans his cane against the wall.

The sound of rummaging through a bag, and then—

“Look what I got,” Viktor whispers, pawing at the top of Jayce’s head from behind with suspiciously fuzzy hands. Jayce snatches his wrists and pulls them down for inspection.

Viktor wears a fuzzy dark blue sock on each hand, dotted with shiny stars—a classic wizard robe pattern.

“For you,” says Viktor, wriggling free of Jayce’s grip to wrap both arms around his neck, “my partner who loves magic.” He tucks Jayce’s forehead under his chin, squeezes tighter with cuteness aggression (“Hey!” yelps Jayce). Finally plants a kiss there and makes him blush and giggle.

After dinner they cuddle close on the couch.

Viktor knocks his own newly cozily socked feet—pink, with little axolotls—into Jayce’s.

“I saw a child dressed as Chucky on my way home,” he says.

Jayce turns to him and raises an eyebrow.

*“…Gendah flooid?”

“Gendah flooid,”* Viktor affirms solemnly, “*and* hauling a Trick or Treat bucket *stuffed* with sweetmilk candies.”

Jayce gasps.

“You didn’t steal any of it?”

The older man lifts his hands in supplication.

“I’m not a monster, Jayce.”

His partner imitating a murderous doll’s Jersey accent with his own lilting voice sends Jayce into his third round of full-body giggles since Viktor came home, and Viktor joins in.
